This Saturday, all heroes are invited to the Superhero Pumpkin Splash at the Aquatic Center. Local heroes, such as the Los Alamos Fire Department, Los Alamos Police Department and Los Alamos Veterans will be here to celebrate with popular superheroes.

Photographer Tony O’Brien, whose exhibit “Light in the Desert: Photographs from the Monastery of Christ in the Desert” is showing in the Upstairs Gallery at Mesa Public Library, will give a gallery talk at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 in the gallery.

O’Brien is a documentary photographer whose work has appeared in many national and international publications. He is the author of a documentary book about the monastic life which has the same title as his current exhibit. He is also the author of “Afghan Dreams: Young Voices of Afghanistan.” Read More

PEEC: Free Night Sky Photography Lesson

PEEC News:

Peter LaDelfe will give a free talk at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20 at the Los Alamos Nature Center at 2600 Canyon Road where he will reveal how to capture the elegance of the night sky with each participant’s camera.

The lesson will focus on producing images of the Milky Way with illuminated foreground features.

LaDelfe will cover the following topics:

  • how to determine the optimum times and locations;
  • selection of equipment;
  • settings and procedure for image capture;
  • light painting of foreground; and
  • post-processing.

The Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities is hosting a Home Efficiency Expo Saturday, Oct. 24.

The event will be held at the Golf Course Community Building at 4244 Diamond Dr. in Los Alamos and is free to the public. Home owners and renters alike are invited to drop in between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Panel Discussion On Women In Science Thursday

Are women in science achieving their goals in careers and research today? Attend the panel discussion at 7 p.m., Thursday, October 15, at Mesa Public Library and hear what three women who work in science and engineering have to say about the topic.

The program is held in conjunction with Ada Lovelace Day celebrations at the Los Alamos County Library System. Ada Lovelace is considered the first computer programmer because of her work with Charles Babbage on an analytical machine.

Get those costumes ready! Los Alamos MainStreet hosts Trick-or-Treat on MainStreet in downtown Los Alamos 4-6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.

Last year more than 4,000 people attended the event. Local businesses and organizations open their doors and set up tables along Central Avenue to hand out treats to costumed trick-or-treaters.

Air Force Heeds Heinrich’s Call To Address RPA Personnel Shortfalls

WASHINGTON, D.C.  U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, welcomed the Air Force’s announcement Oct. 8, to expand the Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) mission at Holloman Air Force Base.
 
The expansion will increase the rate of student production from 603 pilots and sensor operator students in fiscal year 2015 up to an estimated 818 students in fiscal year 2016.
