The Los Alamos County Council voted 4-1 Tuesday evening to transfer the bulk of the duties of the Office of Sheriff over to the police department. The maintenance of the sex offender registry will remain with the sheriff.

Police Focus On Accident Related Traffic Violations

Starting now and continuing through the summer, the Los Alamos Police Department will be conducting traffic enforcement, focusing on accident related violations to include seatbelt enforcement.

The public can help reduce the risk of vehicle crashes by adhering to posted speed limit signs, allowing enough room between them and the vehicle they are following and driving with caution when roadways are wet. Officers also will be on the lookout for impaired drivers for the next few months.

Council Calls For Letters Of Interest For Probate Judge

Los Alamos County Councilors responded during Tuesday night’s meeting to the resignation of Probate Judge Bill McKerley.

McKerley wrote a letter dated May 19, 2016 to Council Chair Rick Reiss that his resignation will be effective upon appointment of a replacement. McKerley was appointed to the position Feb. 16 after Probate Judge Chris Chandler resigned.

McKerley stated in his letter that he had recently been informed by the County Attorney that he had a conflict of interest under the State’s Code of Conduct, which prohibits political involvement for even part-time probate Read More

Today’s Bear Sighting In Quemazon Is Reminder About Living With Large Predators In Los Alamos County

A bear is spotted at 1 p.m. today first on the deck and then helping himself to the contents of a birdfeeder hanging in a tall tree in the backyard of a home in Quemazon. The homeowner contacted the police who are now tracking the bear. When the bear left the residence, he was traveling in a northeasterly direction. The latest word is he was spotted near Torreon in Quemazon a short while later and perhaps moved on to lower Quemazon. The Quemazon Montessori has been notified. Courtesy photo

County Ends Contract For A19 Infrastructure

Los Alamos County took action Friday, May 20 to conclude its contract with RMCI, Inc. for their services relating to infrastructure installation at the A-19 parcel in White Rock.

According to County Engineer Eric Martinez, RMCI was not successful with trenching to install utility lines needed to provide infrastructure at the A-19 site located north of SR4.
