A 1988 State constitutional amendment supplemented a purely political system for selecting judges with a merit-selection appointment process.
 
Judicial Nominating Commissions now vet judicial appointment applicants using 12 criteria. Commissions are independent; include judges, lawyers, and non-lawyers; and are bipartisan.
 
Only Commission-recommended applicants may be appointed. The appointed judge runs in the next partisan election cycle.

FBI: Zuni Pueblo Man Pleads Guilty To Manslaughter

FBI News:
 
ALBUQUERQUE  Raylan Reano, 25, an enrolled member and resident of Zuni Pueblo, pled guilty Friday, April 6 in Federal Court in Albuquerque, to an involuntary manslaughter charge.
 
Reano was arrested in December 2017, on an indictment charging him with killing a woman Oct. 23, 2016, on the Zuni Pueblo in McKinley County. According to the indictment, Reano killed the victim while driving under the influence of alcohol. 
 
During the April 6 proceedings, Reano pled guilty to the indictment charging him with involuntary manslaughter

James Whitehead, a candidate for Los Alamos County Sheriff, has filed a lawsuit in First Judicial District Court against Los Alamos County, Los Alamos Police Department, Los Alamos County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Division, and Los Alamos County Records Custodian Barb Ricci under the New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA).

Los Alamos County Enters Stage I Fire Restrictions

Los Alamos County Stage I Fire Restrictions After consulting with Los Alamos National Laboratory, and in cooperation with the Santa Fe National Forest, the Los Alamos Fire Department has announced that Los Alamos County will enter into Stage I Fire Restrictions, effective immediately.  
 
Under Stage I Fire Restrictions, the following acts are prohibited until further notice:

SFNF Issues Stage I Fire Restrictions Effective April 13

SFNF News:

SANTA FE – Due to current dry conditions and anticipated low moisture levels in weather forecasts, the Santa Fe National Forest will implement forest-wide Stage I fire restrictions effective 8 a.m. Friday, April 13.

Under Stage I restrictions, fires, campfires, charcoal grills and coal and wood stoves are allowed only in developed campsites or picnic areas where agency-built fire rings or grills are provided for use.
