Energy Manager Monica Witt of Utilities & Institutional Facilities at Los Alamos National Laboratory will present a talk on “Federal Sustainability Requirements and LANL” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5 in the upstairs meeting rooms at Mesa Public Library.
Witt has worked at LANL for 10 years in the environmental and energy management fields. She has a Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies.

Los Alamos Golf Course Community Building Construction Begins Tuesday
COUNTY News:
The start of construction for the Golf Course Community Building begins Tuesday, Sept. 4.
Contractor Gerald Martin will be fencing off the southern half of the parking lot.
Patrons to the golf course will be allowed to park in a single row of angled spaces in the main lot and in the overflow parking lot on the west side of the driving range.
There is existing signage directing traffic to the overflow parking lot. The contractor will be using a portion of the overflow parking lot as a staging area for their equipment.

Web-footed Vigilante Stands Guard at Pet Pangaea
Without law enforcement credentials or being asked by store management to do so, this local goose waddled up to a door at Pet Pangaea, 158 Central Park Square, and began guarding it Thursday. Apparently, word got out among the flock of geese and ducks living at Ashley Pond that Pet Pangaea sells highly nutritious pet food – so this feathered vigilante took it upon himself to protect the coveted merchandise. Customers avoided a potential ankle pecking by exiting through an alternate door. Once the goose felt all was well in the store and the food was in safe hands, he waddled back to Ashley Pond. Los Alamos Public Schools has announced two Special Board Meetings.
The first meeting is 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4 in the Los Alamos High School main lobby. The only agenda item for this meeting will be information on the 2013 Bond Election, including review of the the Bond Resolution.

A secret service agent accidentally left her gun inside the lavatory of Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s campaign plane.
CBS News reports that the loaded gun was found by one of its reporters who was travelling with the Republican presidential nominee from Tampa to Indianapolis, Ind., where Romney was scheduled to deliver a speech.

Jean Nereson – Teacher of Over 50 Years has Died
Jean Nereson, 93, who taught at Los Alamos Public Schools for more than 50 years, passed away peacefully of natural causes at her Los Alamos home Sunday, Aug. 26. One of her sons, a daughter, and her caregiver, Rose Gilani, were present.
Jean’s parents were immigrants from Greece. She was born in 1919 and grew up in New York City. She went on to attend Texas State College for Women, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, followed by her Master’s Degree from the University of Minnesota, and postgraduate work at Columbia and Rutgers universities.

Norman J. Pattiz, chairman of Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS) and Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS), has announced that the Honorable Ellen O. Tauscher has been named as an independent governor on the LLNS and LANS Boards of Governors.
The LLCs manage Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore and Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, respectively, for the U.S. Department of Energy. The appointments take effect Sept. 17.
