Bun Ryan speaks to Los Alamos Kiwanis Nov. 19. Photo by Karen Kendall When Kurt Deshayes asked Bernard “Bun” Ryan to speak at Los Alamos Kiwanis Nov. 19, Bun said yes immediately, but neither man was sure exactly what Bun’s topic should be. Finally, they agreed that he should “just talk about life.”
It was a good choice. Bun (as everybody calls him) has lived a remarkably full life—for almost 90 years. Kiwanis members listened intently as he stood at the podium in Kelly Hall at Trinity-on-the-Hill Episcopal Church for 20 minutes and regaled them Read More

By KEN MILDERMembers of the Charter Review Committee (CRC) are giving seemingly compelling arguments for modifying Article V of the County Charter. There is, however, another side to the story. The changes proposed by the CRC are not “benign recommendations” but are rather extensive, often confusing, modifications that strike at the heart of the original intent of the Charter: Operate the Department of Public Utilities (DPU) as a business absent of political self interests.
The actions of the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) are being painted Read More

Solo Traveler: Traveling With Friends
Solo Traveler: Traveling With FriendsMy mother has a friend who has traveled the world alone for the last 40years. When mom hinted she’d love to go on a trip, her friend diplomatically answered, “I wouldn’t want to jeopardize our friendship.”
Traveling with other people can certainly change a relationship. I have known of a few couples who started out as friends on a trip and ended up getting married later on. It’s also not unusual for an extended trip to seriously strain a marriage.
From personal experience, I can attest to being surprised at how a person I knew before traveling Read More

Letter to the Editor: Pepper Spray Repels Coyotes
By DEBBIE MORLEYKeep yourselves and pets safe. Pepper spray works against coyotes! Get ready to spray, hold your own breath, close your eyes and turn your head away. Give a good blast to the attackers eyes or face if possible.
This works on most wild animals, except snakes or birds. (Your own pet will recover from the spray, but it does hurt for a while. But it beats being bitten or dragged off.)
Maybe we need to sew armor plating into dog sweaters?? Read More
