Reminder From Bandelier: It’s Flash Flood Season Again

Although it has been a rainy summer so far, there haven’t yet been any large flash floods in Bandelier National Monument, either in Frijoles Canyon near the Visitor Center, or in the other canyons in the park. 
 
However, floods are certainly possible, and the park has announced that the annual closure of all canyon bottom camping zones July 1 through Sept. 15 is in effect. Hikers are still welcome to go out on the trails, and backpackers can get Wilderness permits to camp in zones on mesa tops. Juniper

Former Los Alamos Registered Sex Offender Arrested In Seattle For Crimes Against Children

Los Alamos County Sheriff Marco Lucero received a call from the Seattle Times last week informing him that Nolan Paul Cyre was recently arrested in Seattle, Wash., for sex crimes involving children. 
 
Cyre, 36, was a registered sex offender in Los Alamos September to January and the sheriff’s office kept close tabs on him, Lucero told the Los Alamos Daily Post.

Linda Peña, the adult probation officer for Los Alamos County Municipal Court and Magistrate Court, says she’s “safe, blunt, and I don’t sugar coat” the situation with offenders.

However, it was obvious July 14, as she spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos, that she cares deeply about her work.

In a brief interview after her talk, she said that she grew up in an area  “riddled by drugs and crime” (although her immediate family didn’t do drugs or drink), and she wanted to “help people get out of that life.” Read More

Magistrate Judge Patricia Casados swears in Los Alamos Sheriff Marco Lucero today at the Justice Center. New Mexico Gov. Water Main Break Closes Rover Near Longview

At around 10 a.m. today the Los Alamos Fire Department was conducting a pressure test at a fire hydrant near the corner of Rover and Longview in White Rock. County employees at the scene said the fire department closed the valve too quickly causing a water hammer effect resulting in a broken main. Purging Natural Gas On East Jemez Road Thursday

COUNTY News:

New Mexico Gas Company (NMGC) has informed the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities that it will purge a natural gas line 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, weather permitting, on East Jemez Road near Los Alamos County’s Eco Station. 

NMGC is purging the line on East Jemez Road so crews can perform maintenance work at its natural gas border station on East Road across from Camino Entrada in Los Alamos.  

“Purging” is the act of releasing natural gas from an existing section of pipeline so that work can be done safely under Federal Regulatory requirements.
