YMCA Improving Healthy Habits During Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

YMCA News:

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and while the dangers of childhood obesity are well chronicled, many families need support changing their children’s habits with the ultimate goal of improving health.

That’s why The Family YMCA—a leading voice on improving health—wants families to understand the dangers of childhood obesity and ways to reverse course through increased physical activity and improved eating habits.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), childhood obesity has more than

Exercise Buffs Circle Ashley Pond

Since Curves has closed, the women who exercised there during early morning decided to meet for walking exercise at various places around town at 6:30 a.m. Here they are Wednesday morning circling Ashley Pond. One of the women estimated that six times around would equal one mile. Other venues they’ve visited include the Canyon Rim Trail, East Park Trail Head, Smith’s Marketplace, and the Los Alamos High School track. Photo by Inez Ross

Honey And Lemon Verbena Poached Pears

My friend Kok Heong McNaughton grows an extraordinary variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs and flowers in her yard.

She recently gave me part of her harvest of lemon verbena leaves. I considered tea or other infusions before settling on a recipe for poached pears, adapted from a recipe by Daniel Orr to reduce sweetness. The recipe does not call for any alcohol in the poaching liquid, and is easily made ahead to be chilled before serving.

Confined by tourist tummy to my hotel on the 5th day of my trip to Havana, I discovered I was not the only one. Dona Edna Flaminguez, of our tour group, 92 years young, had the same problem.

Learning there was a hotel nurse, I gathered Dona Edna, and we both went to the nurse’s office.

He was a handsome young man of about 40 something—Pedro Gonzales. We both briefly described our symptoms, and he spoke English fluently enough that we communicated. Then, he was looking for a word, and Dona Edna started Read More
