Highlands University Launches Mental Health Initiative

With funding from the New Mexico Department of Higher Education, New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) is implementing a pilot program to support student wellness.

Community Briefed On Latest COVID-19 Status

The reported COVID-19 cases from PCR and laboratory tests in Los Alamos County have declined, retired Epidemiologist William Athas said during the community briefing Thursday night, hosted by Los Alamos County.

He said on average, the reported cases total 7-8 per day. This contrasts to mid-June when there were 30 cases a day, Athas said.

“The trend at least appears to be coming down, which is good,” he said.

New Mexico Higher Education Department Opens 2022 Teacher Loan Repayment Program Application

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Higher Education Department encourages teachers with outstanding student loans to apply for debt forgiveness through the state’s Teacher Loan Repayment Program, which is now accepting applications until Aug. 1.  

New Mexico licensed teachers working in high-need fields and schools statewide may be eligible for up to $6,000 per year for two years toward principal debt and interest on federal student loans related to teacher education.

When the Hermit’s Peak and Calf Canyon Wildfires began, New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) stepped in to help.

Kathryn Mahan, the ecological monitoring program manager for the New Mexico Forest and Watershed Restoration Institute at Highlands University, has been splitting her time between Kansas and her home in Las Dispensas.

Seven Los Alamos High School NJROTC students attended leadership training over the summer. Cadets Caleb Moss, Alana Hinojosa, Samson O’Sullivan, Sofia West and Arthur Yarotski took part in Basic Leadership Training June 20 to June 23.
