Community Invited To Join County At Upcoming Meetings For 11 Proposed Capital Improvement Projects

COUNTY News:

The community is invited to attend the Los Alamos County Council at meetings to review the 11 proposed Capital Improvement Projects.

Meeting Schedule:

  • The Dekker Perich Sabatini team will review the projects and associated costs

PSAT To Be Given At LAHS Oct. 19

Los Alamos High School will administer the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) 8-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19. 
 
This exam is mandatory for all sophomores and optional for juniors.
 
This test is the National Merit Scholarship qualifier when taken as a junior and is also used to select minority students for several recognition and scholarship programs.
 
The PSAT/NMSQT measures verbal, math, and writing aptitude and is recommended for juniors who will be taking the SAT later in the school year. Test

Jackson Is Top Predictor In Weekly Pace Race

Aaron Jackson was the best predictor in the weekly pace race held near the end of San Ildefonso Road on North Mesa with a 5 second differential off his predicted time. 
 
Other accurate predictors were: Roxana Candia at 6 seconds off as well as the best finisher on the 1 mile course at 6:32, Jackie Marr with a 18 second second difference, Duane Marr at 21 seconds off, and Nikol Strother recording a 37 second differential and the top female finisher on the 3 mile course with a time of 21:04.

New Mental Health Access Project In Los Alamos

Collaboration is in the air as the United Way of Northern New Mexico and Self Help recently launched a their new mental health website to educate community members about issues, resources and highlight local providers.
 
The project came about as a result of the growing concern about mental health issues, suicide, and misconceptions about seeking help in the community of Los Alamos. The website offers a broad spectrum of resources for elementary aged students, youth, millennials, and LANL employees.

Prescribed Burn Planned On Cuba Ranger District

Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest are planning to conduct the Cedar Springs prescribed burn on the Cuba Ranger District sometime between Sept. 23 and Oct. 1. That window is dependent on favorable conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather forecasts.
 
The 2,187-acre Cedar Springs prescribed burn is approximately five miles northeast of the community of Llaves and one mile north of the Dead Man Lookout. When ignitions begin, there will be a forest closure order issued for public safety in areas around Forest Service Roads 6
