Los Alamos High School will administer the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) 8-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19.
This exam is mandatory for all sophomores and optional for juniors.
This test is the National Merit Scholarship qualifier when taken as a junior and is also used to select minority students for several recognition and scholarship programs.
The PSAT/NMSQT measures verbal, math, and writing aptitude and is recommended for juniors who will be taking the SAT later in the school year. Test results may also be used to help identify students who would be successful in AP classes but who might need some extra encouragement to sign up for these more rigorous classes.
There is no cost for LAHS sophomores. All sophomores are automatically registered for the PSAT and do not need to complete a registration form.
Juniors and Homeschool students are required to complete a registration form and pay the $25.00 exam fee. Please note that LAHS is unable to refund any portion of the PSAT registration fee if you do not take the test. Registration forms may be found on the LAHS website or in the school’s Career Resource Center (in the library). Deadline to register is Wednesday, September 21.
Students are encouraged to attend the LAHS Career Fair immediately following the PSAT exam administration. This is a great opportunity to meet with representatives from a number of local businesses in the community, including LANL and LAMC, and explore career possibilities. The LAHS food service will be open and offering a limited menu for sale.
Classes are not in session on exam day, as Senior Advisement Conferences will be taking place, but bus service will be provided for LAHS students to and from LAHS in the morning for those students taking the exam. If you choose not to take the bus, you must arrive at the high school by 7:45 a.m.
