If all has gone as planned, New Mexico has a new political party.

Official events to establish the Forward Party were scheduled to take place on May 8. On that day—within 30 days of its April organizing event as prescribed by law—the party was due to present its bylaws along with a sufficient number of signatures to the Secretary of State or a county clerk. According to chairman Bob Perls, the required number of signatures was about 3500 and they have more than enough. Party leaders have been working with the Secretary of State’s Read More

Weekly Fishing Report: May 10, 2026

Los Alamos Daily Post

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish stocked a total of 39,163 rainbow trout weighing 16,359 pounds. Most of the stocking will now be in Northern New Mexico.

It looks like there will be one of the weakest spring runoffs in memory this year. The snowpack is already disappearing, and the weather has been unseasonably warm and dry. This is reflected in streamflow measurements. Normally, the Rio Grande would be swollen with spring runoff from the melting snow. Streamflows above 1,000 cubic-feet-per-second would be common.

Fr. Glenn: Remembering Mothers

By Fr. Glenn Jones:

I saw a rather disturbing post the other day. It was relaying a story of a man who married a single mother and was (by that mother’s own testimony) being an excellent father to her child. And yet some comments criticized the mother in “taking advantage of” her husband and that he was a “fool” for raising another man’s child. I could scarcely fathom the heartlessness of it. Any man or woman acting as a good parent to a child not his/her own should be praised, not criticized. After all, is that not the ideal when people adopt? Have we become so heartless that we cannot have natural human Read More

Izraelevitz: Clarifying Reasons Behind Run For Sheriff

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Candidate For County Sheriff

It is unfortunate that online discussion about the merits of an elected Sheriff for Los Alamos, specifically regarding my campaign, has devolved into questions about my ethical compass. I would like to take a moment to be clear and factual about the reasons behind my effort to be elected as our Sheriff.

First of all, I am frank about my opposition to a Los Alamos County Sheriff, as I have been for a decade as County Councilor and in multiple communications. The position has evolved into one with no duties, is a waste of taxpayers’ money, and, for this Read More

Amateur Naturalist: Understanding Trends In Bird Populations

By ROBERT DRYJA
Los Alamos

National new sources report that bird populations are decreasing. Steps therefore need to be taken to correct this trend. However a joke from statistics comes to mind. “If you have your foot in a bucket of ice water and your hand on a hot stove, you feel fine on the average.” There can be similar variations among  bird species while the overall pattern is important. Data collected over 10 years at a bird feeder presents local patterns.

Forty five different species have come to a backyard bird feeder over the past 10 years. The great majority have made only occasional visits Read More

McQuiston: Protecting Homes From NM Spring Winds

By ALLEN MCQUISTON
Jemez Insurance Agency
Serving Los Alamos Since 1963

Spring in New Mexico often brings beautiful weather, warmer afternoons, and unfortunately, some of the strongest winds of the year. In places like Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, and across northern New Mexico, gusty conditions can arrive quickly and create unexpected damage to homes and property.

Many homeowners think of hail, fire, or snow as major risks, but spring winds can quietly cause expensive problems that are easy to overlook until something breaks, leaks, or blows away.

Here are a few smart ways homeowners Read More

RPLA Announces May 2026 Events Including Councilor David Reagor’s Townhall Meeting At UNM-LA

By LISA SHIN
Chair
Republican Party of Los Alamos

Dear Friends:

Our Los Alamos Federated Republican Women (LAFRW) Freedom Tea proved to be another delightful event with a fantastic turnout and fundraising effort.

I want to personally thank Bill Enloe for drawing more readership than ever to my April 2026 newsletter.   He rightly says that: “I don’t believe the government should or can successfully subsidize private businesses. Which ones do they pick to support? How long will the government continue to support the businesses?”

He may be unaware that our County has established the Local Economic Read More
