McQuiston: Protecting Homes From NM Spring Winds

Spring in New Mexico often brings beautiful weather, warmer afternoons, and unfortunately, some of the strongest winds of the year. In places like Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, and across northern New Mexico, gusty conditions can arrive quickly and create unexpected damage to homes and property.

Many homeowners think of hail, fire, or snow as major risks, but spring winds can quietly cause expensive problems that are easy to overlook until something breaks, leaks, or blows away.

Here are a few smart ways homeowners can better protect their property during New Mexico’s windy season.

Check Your Roof Before the Wind Does

Loose shingles, aging flashing, and small roof weaknesses can turn into much bigger issues once high winds arrive. Even minor damage can allow moisture into the home later on.

A quick roof inspection each spring can help catch issues early before they become costly repairs. Pay special attention to areas around vents, chimneys, and roof edges where wind tends to lift materials first.

Secure Outdoor Furniture and Decorations

Patio furniture, umbrellas, grills, and decorative items can quickly become airborne during strong gusts.

Beyond damaging your own property, these items can also create hazards for nearby vehicles, fences, or neighboring homes.

If strong winds are in the forecast, securing or storing loose outdoor items can make a major difference.

Inspect Trees Around the Property

Spring winds often expose weak branches that may not survive another season. Overhanging limbs near roofs, garages, vehicles, or power lines deserve special attention.

Removing dead or unstable branches ahead of time can help reduce the risk of sudden damage during wind events.

Don’t Forget Garage Doors and Fencing

Strong winds can put enormous pressure on garage doors and fencing, especially older structures that may already be weakened over time. Loose fence posts, sagging gates, or aging hardware are worth addressing before windy weather peaks.

A small repair today can prevent a much larger replacement later.

Clean Gutters and Drainage Areas

Windy conditions often fill gutters with leaves, needles, and debris. Once spring rains arrive, clogged drainage systems can lead to water backing up around the roof or foundation.

Keeping gutters clear helps your home handle both wind and rain more effectively.

A Little Prevention Goes a Long Way

One of the challenges with wind damage is that small problems are easy to miss at first. A lifted shingle, a loosened fence panel, or a cracked tree limb may not seem urgent until the next storm makes the damage worse.

Taking a proactive approach each spring can help homeowners avoid unnecessary stress and protect the long term condition of their home. In New Mexico, where weather can shift quickly and winds can be surprisingly powerful, preparation matters more than many people realize.
