This year’s LANL Student Symposium, “Championing Scientific Careers,” is July 26-27 at the Los Alamos High School campus.

The Symposium provides a unique opportunity for students to present their research. The intent of the Symposium is to broaden students’ expertise and prepare them for careers in science and nontechnical fields. This is an excellent forum for students to network and make professional contacts.

When our first chickens arrived in a cardboard box 40 years ago, including Peeper’s mom Peeky, we had already adopted Poncho.

As a “Santa Fe Shepherd,” his instincts were just about right. He helped us herd the chickens back into the pen for the night. (Chickens don’t herd, but that’s another story.)

Star Gaze at Dark Night Aug. 3

PA News:

The Pajarito Astronomers will hold a County-sponsored Dark Night at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 at Spirio Soccer Field in Overlook Park.

Weather permitting, the public is invited to come out, wander among the telescopes and star gaze. The planets Venus, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus will be visible. There will be a tour of the summer constellations, and there will be telescope views of double stars, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies.

Splash n Dash Draws More Than 100 Athletes

More than 100 athletes participated in Splash n Dash Wednesday. 

There is one more Splash n Dash Aug. 7 and there will be prizes for anyone who participates in three or more of the events. 

Splash n Dash events are free and open to ages six and up. There are three courses this year: a 400M swim and 5K run, a 200M swim and 3K run, and for athletes ages 6 to 12, a 100M swim and 1.3 mile run.

Soccer tryouts for the girls high school soccer program begin Aug. 12.

There will be a short meeting at 7 a.m., Aug. 12 at Sullivan Field to collect medical release forms, get a head count, review schedule and procedures for the try outs.

The Los Alamos Kiwanis Club presented Erin Kirk with a scholarship recently. Erin will be attending the University of New Mexico and will study communication or education. Border Zone Extension Expected to Boost Tourism, Economy in Southern New Mexico

Santa Fe– Mexican tourists who have a Laser Visa Border Crossing Card can now travel to the Southern New Mexico cities of Las Cruces, Mesilla, Deming and Lordsburg, thanks to the new 55 Mile Rule, which went into effect July 12.

Prior to the new rule, visitors from Mexico could only travel 25 miles into New Mexico, putting these towns off limits.
