Election Night Results Process Changes Due To Pandemic

ELECTION News:

After the Governor announced May 15 that the ban on mass gatherings would remain in place for the foreseeable future (which the Governor again affirmed June 1, 2020), the Los Alamos County Clerk’s Office made the decision to forgo election night reporting in the Boards and Commission Room, to help mitigate the spread of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Rather than congregating and waiting for results to be posted, the Clerk’s office will email candidates, local party chairs and media, a PDF document of the results, as they become available from each of the Vote Centers.

The Clerk’s office will be sending this communication to the email addresses on file. The PDF document will contain a running total of the sites being reported, which will be noted at the top of the document. They anticipate having the ability to also send a separate report, specific to each Vote Center.

The Clerk’s office also will simultaneously post results at www.losalamosnm.us/clerk. Once they have been emailed and posted to the website, they will also post to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram social media accounts.

As a reminder, voters may submit completed ballots to any Election Day polling place until 7 p.m. today, therefore, the Absentee by Mail Precinct Board will be working well past 7 p.m., qualifying and processing any ballots accepted at each of the Election Day Vote Centers and given to the County Clerk.

While the New Mexco Secretary of State and the County Clerk’s office do not anticipate any major delays in the reporting of election results after polls close at 7 p.m., because of the unprecedented nature of conducting an election during a global pandemic there is a possibility that the results in certain counties and/or for certain races might be delayed longer than usual.
