Los Alamos County Leader in Health Insurance Coverage
COUNTY News:
The percentage of residents younger than 65 in Los Alamos County who had health insurance in 2011 was 95.3 percent, putting it in second place among the nation’s 3,143 counties, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Only Norfolk County in Massachusetts had a higher insured rate at 96.9 percent.
New Mexico had the fourth-highest uninsured rate among the states in 2011 at 23 percent. It followed Texas, Florida and Nevada.
Los Alamos County had by far the lowest uninsured rate in New Mexico at 4.7 percent. The next lowest was Eddy County at 17.9 percent. Read More

Bonnie Murchie Koch passed away on Wednesday August 28, 2013 at her home in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
Bonnie was born July 20, 1954 in Bloomington, Indiana, the third daughter of four children of William and Barbara (Hamilton) Murchie. Bonnie graduated from Broad Ripple High School in 1972 and went on to receive a BA in chemistry in 1976 with Phi Beta Kappa and an MS in geophysics in 1979 from Indiana University at Bloomington, Indiana. Marilyn Quadracci Fabry, 60, a resident of Los Alamos, went home to be with our Lord on Saturday, August 31, 2013 following a battle with cancer. She was born on June 13, 1953 to Art and Laura Quadracci in McAlester, Okla. She was an only child – God bless them.
She grew up in McAlester, OK and attended Oklahoma State University (Go Pokes!) where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. She taught in Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico; the longest in New Mexico at Los Alamos High School for close to 20 years.

Charles (always known as “Charley”) was born July 21, 1939 in Alice, Texas to John Arleigh and Nellmarie Huff and spent most of his childhood in Boerne.

Letter to the Editor: Concern Over Large Trucks on Main Hill Road
By PATRICIA MEDINAI would like to voice my concerns over the use of the Main Hill Road by large construction trucks.
Part of my exasperation comes from the delays these trucks are creating by using the road and traveling at 20 miles per hour. I don’t travel the road that much so my concerns center around the safety impacts.

Pet of the Week: Darcie the Long-haired Tortoiseshell

Darcie, the long-haired tortoiseshell has really come out of her shell. She was surrendered with a few other feline friends when their owner moved to assisted living.
For a while Darcie hid under the kennels, but has finally decided that the carpeted cat tower isn’t so bad, as long as she gets the spot on top where she can keep an eye on everyone else.
Darcie retires a bit when approached, but quickly warms up when petted softly. Sometimes she’ll even roll over and show off her back feet – one is black and one is white. Darcie is declawed and must be an indoor cat.

Experienced Volunteer Ground Personnel Invited to Join Search for Firefighter in Jemez
NMSP News:
New Mexico State Police is heading up a Search and Rescue (SAR) effort in the Santa Fe Nat’l Forest near Jemez Springs to locate a firefighter, Token Adams, who went missing Friday while conducting size up for a new start in the forest.
Volunteer SAR is proceeding, and experienced volunteer ground personnel are invited to join in this effort.
