Letter to the Editor: The Failing Mil Levy May Bring to Light What is Needed at UNM-LA
By RICHARD SAUNDERSShame, Mr. Soran? Why is there any amount of shame for this community for failing to pass the UNM-LA mill levy? We are indeed a town built on higher education, so one should expect this town to make decisions with higher thinking.
Higher thinking requires collecting some data. UNM-LA tuition is a mere 30 percent of tuition at UNM Main Campus. UNM-LA tuition is 56 percent of Northern New Mexico College. Los Alamos also boasts one of the highest per capita scores for individuals with doctoral degrees, and the most recent US Census states that 63.9 percent of our adults Read More

By ALITA WINEI can understand Mr. Pippin’s frustration at the system in place to meet the canditates for chief, but his letter brought up additional questions.
That is why the County, and every other government agency, has hierarchical leadership.

Letter to the Editor: No Shame For Voting My Conscience!
By GERALD ANTOSMr. Soran, I feel no shame for voting against the UNM-LA mill levy and don’t plan on it.
As one that was born and raised in Los Alamos I don’t feel it the city’s responsibility to pay for this college! It’s just a shame that everyone wants a bigger chunk out of our paycheck or savings and doing
it through our property tax sure makes it seem as though the government just can’t get enough.
Why don’t they take the whole damn check and leave us with nothing. I’m sure they would like to! The simple truth of the matter is we don’t owe Read More

Letter to the Editor: Against Being Taxed for UNM-LA
By DIANA NORWOOD, OwnerHere’s a little bit of a different perspective to “not supporting the mil-levy tax.”
The gentleman writes: “Shame on us for not supporting higher education.” I support higher education; however, do not believe that I should be paying a governed tax to do so. The university is not a “non-profit” entity. It’s a business, just the same as the business I own and operate – and at times struggle to continue operating.
The small businesses in Los Alamos struggle quite
