At least I watched the White Silkie, Ms. Fluff, raise her after the second bear attack. I’ve been bringing her lay pellets and cracked corn for a long time. LAVNS Hosts Community Memorial Service Sunday
LAVNS News:
Each year the Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service (LAVNS) holds an annual Community Memorial Service to honor those loved ones who have died. LAVNS would like to invite everyone in the community to the 18th annual memorial program.
A simple non-denominational service is held with a ceremony of flowers, when family members and friends have an opportunity to briefly remember their loved ones and place a flower into a memorial vase. Flowers will be provided by Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service.

Council Approves Appointment of New Police Chief
Dino P. Sgambellone
The County Council unanimously approved the appointment of Dino P. Sgambellone as the new police chief of the Los Alamos Police Department.
Sgambellone assumes his new duties next week and will receive an annual salary of $135,600, which is slightly below the midpoint salary range for the police chief position.
He also will receive 40 hours of leave time to move his family to Los Alamos from Ohio where he worked for a local police department for 22 years, the last three as chief of police.

Manager Bob Westervelt, Department of Public Utilities – Finance/Administration, answers questions before Council unanimously approved an amended ordinance relating to gas rates. Based on the variable nature of the cost of gas, including the cost of transportation, Council approved a consumption charge broken into a fixed and variable component. County Granted Presidential Disaster Declaration
Wearing his hat as Los Alamos County Emergency Management coordinator as opposed to acting police chief, Philmont Taylor announced at tonight’s County Council meeting that Los Alamos has been granted a Presidential Disaster Declaration for last month’s flood damage. A Presidential Disaster Declaration is an action by the President, pursuant to the Compact of Free Association, to make U.S. federal funding available for emergency relief and reconstruction assistance. Sarov Sends Gifts to Los Alamos County
County Council Chair Geoff Rodgers holds a statue of Saint Seraphim of Sarov, a Russian ascetic who lived at the Sarov Monastery in the 18th century, and is considered a wonder-worker. Update on Condition of Los Alamos Trails

Los Alamos County Open Space Specialist Craig Martin has completed his assessment of trail conditions following the Friday the 13th storms.
Trail Conditions as of Oct. 17:
Due to flooding and construction work on the Los Alamos Reservoir, the road to the reservoir is currently closed.
Floods damaged a section of the Pueblo Canyon Rim Trail near the Los Alamos Cooperative Market. Look for trail detour signs that lead across an entry road to the New Mexico Consortium Building to avoid the damaged and hazardous section of trail.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) this month commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the Vela satellite launch, the U.S.’s first treaty monitoring satellite. The purpose of Vela was to monitor compliance with the 1963 Limited Test Ban Treaty, a cornerstone arms control treaty which prohibits nuclear weapons testing in the atmosphere, in outer space and under water.
