Hall: Why I Am Running For Re-election

By JIM HALL
Los Alamos

This is the second of three articles explaining why I am running for Re-election to the LAPS Board. My first article provided some basic information about LAPS as an institution, the duties of the Board, and some major accomplishments of the current Board and administration. This column will focus on current issues.

The biggest current issue is operational funding. In New Mexico, 90 percent of school operational funds are allocated to school districts based on a complex formula  (see http://www.ped.state.nm.us/div/fin/school.budget/dl09/How%20NM%20schools%20are%20fundedFY0209.pdf Read More

Just One Thing To Do This Week: Share Your Story

By MARY BETH MAASSEN
Los Alamos

I recently attended one of the Los Alamos County Brand Action Plan presentations.

Los Alamos – Where Discoveries Are Made was a great presentation and I think holds a lot of promise for moving our community forward. One of the participants mentioned the difficult stigma the community of Los Alamos has with some people. I certainly understood this because once upon a time I was one of those “some people.”

I met my now-husband, then a geologist with LANL, 26 years ago at the Midsummer Music Festival in Telluride. I was there with singer/songwriter and social activist Read More

Alex Mueller was in a meeting at Lawrence Livermore when he got a call; a friend asked if he would like to take the ski trip of a lifetime. So in November 2014, Mueller packed his bags, picked up his skis, flew on a plane to Argentina before boarding an ex-Russian ice breaker vessel to Antarctica.

By STEPHEN BOERIGTER
Los Alamos

I am excited about to the opportunity to serve my community on the Los Alamos Public School Board for District 2. Our schools in Los Alamos are a strong attractor for new Laboratory employees, retirees and others who come to Los Alamos. We value education in Los Alamos and we want to continue strengthening our schools.

I believe that I’m well-qualified to serve on the LAPS Board. I have a long history of Board leadership for non-profit institutions and other organizations. I served as the chair of the Church Council at White Rock Baptist Church for a number of years. Read More

Joshua Bell Concert Sold Out – Patrons Urged To Carpool

LACA News:

Parking is expected to be a major issue when violin super-star Joshua Bell performs at 8 p.m.  Feb. 3 in the Smith Auditorium.  The concert is completely sold out so over 940 people will need to park and get into the hall during chilly weather.

Because the parking lot adjacent to the Smith Auditorium is not large enough to handle a sold-out house, the Los Alamos Concert Association strongly urges patrons to carpool.

Locals who don’t mind a little walk from Sullivan Field could also consider leaving spaces in the Smith lot for

By JAMES ROBINSON
Candidate, UNM-LA Advisory Board

I would like to thank the citizens of Los Alamos for coming out in fantastic numbers to pledge their support for education.

The votes they casted in this election are not just a voice of support, but a dollar investment in the institutions that make a better community.

It seems just like yesterday that I accepted the invitation to help UNM-LA with the Mil Levy campaign by serving as chairman of Education Drives Discovery. It was a fantastic journey that allowed me to not only champion the institution that I love, but meet some wonderful Read More
