As I mentioned last week my new year endeavor is to adopt one new behavior each week that brings me, my family, and the planet a little closer to better health.

JEAN FURNISH Dec. 25, 1924 – Dec. 24, 2016

Jean Furnish, 91, was born on Christmas Day, 1924 and ended this earthly life on Christmas Eve, 2016.

She was born in Schenectady NY, and lived in Los Alamos from 1950-1954, and from 1959 to now. From 1954 through 1958 she worked at Stanford Research Institute in California where she met and married her husband Alfred.

In addition to her family, she devoted time and energy to the choir at Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church, choral music, and piano. Hiking, sailing, and skiing with her family were important, and she had a love for puzzles and mysteries.

SANTA FE Today the New Mexico Environment Department acknowledged their role in ensuring a safe reopening of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, while recognizing the first emplacement of transuranic waste into the underground repository.

DWI Planning Council, ACT Report Successful Buzz Bus Service For New Year’s Eve

COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos DWI Planning Council and Atomic City Transit (ACT) are very pleased with the number of people who chose to take advantage of the free safe ride services this past New Year’s Eve holiday.

A total of 89 trips were provided (nine Friday, Dec.30 and 80 Saturday, Dec. 31). The New Year’s Eve number is a growth of 98 percent from last year’s total. ACT reported that they did not have to deny anyone a ride this year for lack of a bus to serve them, and the average scheduled time compared to requested time was less than one minute. They attribute this punctuality to having multiple drivers. Read More

State Corporate Tax Rate Reductions A Growing Trend

WASHINGTON, D.C.  As 2017 gets underway, four states–including New Mexico–and the District of Columbia will phase in cuts to their respective corporate income tax rates. New Mexico’s rate will go from 6.6 percent to 6.2 percent.
 
In 2018, the rate will settle at 5.9 percent, down from 7.6 percent in 2013. The rate cuts were paired with a broadening of the tax base by reducing the generosity of some corporate tax credits.
