Body Found in Hotel Room in White Rock Today

Los Alamos police and firefighters responded about noon today to the scene of a dead man in his room at the Hampton Inn & Suites on N.M. 4 in White Rock. According to officials, relatives discovered the body of the Springfield, VA man and called 911. Los Alamos Historical Society Honors Helene Suydam During Pre-Gala Event At Bethe House

Los Alamos Historical Society Board Member John Ruminer presents the Los Alamos History Award to Helene and Jerry Suydam during a pre-gala event Friday evening at the Bethe House. Jerry has passed away but since the 1950s, he and Helene owned the home on Bathtub Row once occupied by J. Robert Oppenheimer. The couple donated the Oppenheimer House to the Los Alamos Historical Society in 2004. The Los Alamos High School Graduating Class of 1964 will have its 50th Reunion in Los Alamos instead of Albuquerque.

Opting to hold it on the weekend of LAHS’ Homecoming Game Sept. 19, the Organizing Committee chose to bring to their alma mater and Los Alamos much of the business many reunions give to Albuquerque.

The Administration of LAHS graciously invited the Class of ‘64 to ride and walk in the lead of the Parade Friday afternoon with a special seating section that evening at the game against Farmington’s Kirkland Central High Bronco’s. Read More

Letter to the Editor: County Charter Governing Utilities Department Is Broke – Let’s Fix It

The County Charter was passed nearly a half-century ago. The provisions governing the utilities department are flawed because they:

(1) do not allow effective oversight of the utilities operations by the council, which is accountable to the voters and the law for these operations,

(2) there is no way for the council to hold the utilities board or the utilities director accountable for mismanagement or poor performance, and

Los Alamos Students Awarded Grand Prizes in Reading Challenge

LAPS News:

Three Los Alamos students were awarded grand prizes in the 2014 New Mexico True Reading Challenge.

  • Grace Xie, a fifth gradeer at Mountain Elementary School;
  • Rainy Ferrell, a first grader at Aspen Elementary School; and
  • Reyana Naranjo, a first grader at Mountain Elementary School.

Xie won a hot air balloon ride with Gov. Susana Martinez and a family four-pack of admission tickets to the Albuquerque Balloon Museum.

Eighty-one students at Los Alamos High School have earned AP scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program® (AP®) provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams.

Ice Rink Offices Closed Sept. 9-12 For Staff Training

The Los Alamos County Ice Rink offices will be closed beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9 through Friday, Sept. 12 for PROS Division staff training. 

The public will be able to rent Miniature Golf Equipment (Putters and Golf Balls) and Tennis Equipment (Racquets and Tennis Balls) at the PROS Administrative window located on the first floor of the Los Alamos County Municipal Building, 1000 Central Ave, Suite 150.
