We are living in a new world of COVID-19, compared to where we were in most of 2020 and 2021 to date.

The good news is that an overwhelming share of our eligible citizens have been fully vaccinated against the virus that causes COVID-19. Over the last several months, we had very few new infections in Los Alamos County.

New Mexico Emergency SNAP Benefits Extension Continues

SANTA FE — New Mexico households receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits will continue to receive the maximum amount for their household size for the month of August, announced the New Mexico Human Services Department.

Baby (neonate) snake season will start any time now and will continue until early to mid September.

So please know that bull snake and coachwhip babies and other species are being hatched from eggs. You also may see female live-bearing snakes such as garter snakes and rattlesnakes seeking a place to give birth. Baby rattlesnakes will not have developed rattles yet but will have what is called a “button” at the end of the tail. Every time the youngster sheds, it will develop a rattle.

Los Alamos High School senior Orion Henderson was named High School All-America for swimming by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) for his 200 individual medley and 500 free performances at the New Mexico state high school meet on May 15.

Henderson’s times of 1:50.69 for the 200 IM and 4:35.37 for the 500 freestyle handily bested the state meet field.

His two individual wins helped propel the Hilltopper boys to their second straight state team title this past season.

Los Alamos High School senior Kelly Wetteland and her sister, sophomore Anna Wetteland, who recently moved here from Maryville, Tenn., were named High School All-America by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) for their performances at the TISCA Tennessee state high school meet held April 24-25 in Knoxville.
