Vela V-B was the last of the Vela twin satellites launched as part of a program to improve the United States’ capability to detect, locate and identify nuclear explosions conducted in a variety of environments. Los Alamos is commemorating 50 years of space-based arms treaty verification efforts this month to coincide with the launch of the first Vela satellite Oct. 17, 1963. Los Alamos Rotary Club President James Nesmith received a club banner from Oscar Batres of the Nordeste Rotary Club of Guatemala City at Tuesday’s Rotary Club meeting at the Dixie Girl Restaurant. Governor Joins New Mexico Kindergarteners in World Record Reading Attempt

Santa Fe – Gov. Susana Martinez will join students in Santa Fe today to participate in the national “Read for the Record” Event.

Martinez and the students will join millions of others in reading the same book, on the same day to promote literacy and attempt to break the current world record.

An organization in Arizona, the Southwest Environmental Information Network (SEINet), has been gathering the most important southwest databases into a single website.

SEINet recently accepted the Jemez Mountain Herbarium, which is housed by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), and has about 3,000 species from Los Alamos County and the Jemez Mountains. Anyone in the world can query SEINet.
