New Mexico School Meals Remain Free For Most Despite Federal Reversal

SANTA FE — About 57,000 New Mexico students who qualify for reduced-price school meals will continue eating for free because of legislation championed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to offset federally mandated co-pays.

House Bill 10, passed in the 2020 regular session, required the Public Education Department to cover co-pays that families in the reduced-price meal program are expected to contribute toward the cost of their children’s school-based meals. New Mexico Higher Education Department Breaks Down Barriers For Adults With New Policy & Resources

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED) has announced that adult learners pursuing high school equivalency (HSE) credentials no longer have to pass subject area tests within a three-year time period, making hundreds more adult students eligible to receive their secondary credential.

Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced Wednesday the appointment of Ada Limón as the nation’s 24th Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry for 2022-2023.

Time Change Update: Oversized Portable Classroom Transport From Mountain To Aspen July 14

Update: Transport time changed to 2 p.m. Thursday.

Desert Wind Transport is working with Los Alamos Public Schools to transport an oversized portable classroom at 10 a.m. July 14 from Mountain Elementary School to Aspen Elementary School.

The contractor is asking residents who live along 38th Street or Villa Street to avoid parking vehicles on the west side of 38th and the south side of Villa July 14.  Rather, it is preferred that vehicles be parked off the streets in residents’ respective driveways to clear a path for the oversized load to move along the route.

SANTA FE — Today, the New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department (ECECD) released three videos dubbed in English, Spanish, Vietnamese (and soon Diné) that walks families step-by-step on how to apply for free childcare, early intervention services through the Family Infant Toddler Program, and Home Visiting services.

Each video is only around two minutes long and provides an easy-to-understand walkthrough for accessing important early childhood programs that support children and families.
