Boy Scout Troop 122 News:
Dirt. Sweat. Camping. Adventure. These are the things that all Scouts love, and the members of Los Alamos Boy Scout Troop 122 got to experience all of them at Camp Laramie Peak, Wyo. during their week-long merit badge camp held July 8-16.
The 11 scouts attending camp were Elyas Dezendorf, Kieran Gattiker, Jonah Pratt, Kellan Pratt, Nate Pratt, Simon Pratt, Ian Sandbourgh, Alex Sandbourgh, Brian Scott, Brendan Treat, and Sam Wescott. Adults supporting camp onsite were Joey and Melissa Dezendorf, Don Siebe, Paul Treat and Carissa Waida.
Nestled at the junction of the Rocky Mountains and the great plains, Camp Laramie Peak (the seventh oldest Boy Scout camp in the nation), provides a full range of outdoor merit badge programs that scouts need for advancement to the rank of Eagle Scout.
“I really loved learning to climb, belay, and repel. It was exciting and a little bit scary. And now I’ve earned my first merit badge,” said Brian Scott who attended camp for the first time this year.
“The camp staff made it special. They really loved each other and they loved working with the scouts at camp,” Brendan Treat said.
The camp offers a wide range of nature merit badges and a living history program which includes metalwork, wilderness survival, leatherwork, handicrafts, archery and riflery. Scouts also enjoyed rock climbing, zip-lining programs, and fun-filled campfires filled with skits and songs.
Troop 122 was the sole recipient of the coveted Camp Laramie Peak Spirit Award that recognizes outstanding cheerful and exuberant dedication and a can-do spirit throughout all aspects of camp life. While at camp, Troop 122 saw progress or completion of nearly 50 individual merit badges.
Now in its 65th year at Los Alamos, Troop 122 continues an excellent scouting program that emphasizes leadership development for boys ages 11-18. The troop meets 7-8:30 p.m. Thursdays at the United Methodist Church in Los Alamos. New members are always welcome to join the troop. No previous Cub Scouting experience is needed.
