Council Focuses on Six CIP Projects Next Week

The Los Alamos County Council will hold two special Capital Improvement Project meetings at 6 p.m., Tuesday May 15 and 6 p.m., Wednesday May 16 in Council Chambers, 475 20th St.
At the May 15 meeting, no action will be taken. The focus will be limited to six Phase 2 projects:
- Ashley Pond Park Improvements
- Golf Course Improvements
- Ice Rink Cover and Improvements
- Nature Center

On May 1, I was one of about 20 legislators — representing both parties and both chambers — selected to attend a conference on opioid drug (e.g., oxycodone, Vicodin, Percocet, hydrocodone) misuse in New Mexico.
Medical professionals and senior state officials also attended. Two quotes from the conference demand our attention.
- “New Mexico leads the U.S. in deaths from drug overdoses, now exceeding deaths from motor vehicle crashes.”

PEEC’s popular evening wildflower walks with Chick Keller are starting again. The first walk with be 5:30 p.m., Thursday May 10. Participants can meet at PEEC, 3540 Orange St., to carpool to the trailhead. The walks are free and open to the public, with no registration required.

Runaway Vehicle Crashes into White Rock Visitor Center
Police arrived at the scene of an accident in which an unoccupied vehicle rolled away from the Shell Gas Station at Rover Boulevard and N.M. 4 at about 5 p.m. today, picked up speed through the adjacent parking lot and plowed into the White Rock Visitor Center. According to police, the driver went inside the station to prepay her gas.
