Underground Line Fault Causes Eastern Area Power Outage
DPU News:
Officials from the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities report that a power outage, which began at 3:52 p.m. Wednesday in the Eastern Area bounded by Myrtle Street, Rim Road and Canyon Road, affected 98 customers.
Power was restored by 4:45 p.m. to all but 20 of those customers. At 6:45 p.m., power was restored to the remaining 20 customers on Piñon Road and Rim Road.
An underground line fault at Piñon Road caused the electric interruption.
DPU officials also noted that this outage was caused by aging underground infrastructure and is not related to the construction work underway Read More
High School Bus Loop and Landscape Project Update

Work on the Los Alamos High School bus loop and landscape project is moving forward at a quickening pace.
New sidewalks are being installed along Smith Auditorium and P-wing. A new drainage system will be installed in the parking lot corner of P-wing and Smith.
In addition, the entire parking lot will be seal coated and re-striped. Building forms for the new high school sidewalk are being formed.

The Hilltop House Hotel at 400 Trinity Dr., is in financial trouble and it appears that the investors were the last to know.
The group of 17 men and women gathered in person and by telephone for a noon meeting at the hotel Monday to discuss what, if anything, can be done to save the hotel from sinking into bankruptcy or being sold off for pennies on the dollar.

Reduced Traffic at 2008 Olympics Yielded Big Cut in Planet-Warming Gas
New research shows that levels of carbon monoxide dropped sharply in the Beijing area between 2007 and 2008, due to traffic restrictions imposed because of the 2008 Summer Olympics. This change in emissions, determined from a computer model along with satellite measurements of carbon monoxide, enabled scientists to infer that carbon dioxide emissions also dropped dramatically, an indication of the effect that reduced traffic can have on the greenhouse gas. WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration Friday released the Draft Surplus Plutonium Disposition Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (Draft SPD Supplemental EIS) for public review and comment.

The Los Alamos unit of the American Contract Bridge League held its annual sectional bridge tournament July 27-29 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. There were 148 tables in play over the three day event, 19 tables better than 2011. Los Alamos County Councilor Apologizes for Behavior During Trip to Russia

Los Alamos County Council Vice Chair Ron Selvage apologized today for an indiscretion he had with a woman while on an official visit to Moscow and Sarov last September.
“I did make a mistake on the Russian trip and it’s something that I regret and that I’m going to be paying for,” Selvage said this morning. “My wife and I are working through this and we would appreciate some privacy during this difficult time.”
The mistake Selvage is referring to is an inappropriate relationship he had with Nora Arbuckle, a member of the Sister Cities Initiative

Demolition of the Shamrock Gas Station on the southwest corner of Trinity Drive and Knecht Street is moving full speed ahead in preparation for the construction of a Smith’s branded gas station.
Smith’s will lease the property from Polk JT Properties. The Los Alamos County Council has approved a lease agreement with North American Development Group (NADG), paving the way for the development of Trinity Place.
