SANTA FE – Over the wishes of the majority of Senate Democrats who voted against her appointment, Hanna Skandera today was confirmed as the Secretary of the Public Education Department (NMPED) in a vote by the full New Mexico Senate. 

Earlier in the day the Senate Rules Committee, chaired by Sen. Linda Lopez, D-Bernalillo, agreed to forward the controversial appointment of Skandera to the Senate floor following four years of being the Secretary-designate. The final Senate vote was 22-19, with all Republicans voting Yes.

WASHINGTON, D.C. During a recent Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources hearing, U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., confirmed with U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz that the recovery effort at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad is on track to return the facility to normal operation by the current target date of 2018.

WIPP is the only active facility in the United States that disposes defense-generated transuranic (TRU) waste. The facility halted operations in February 2014 following two separate accidents – a fire and a radiation release. Read More

Last weekend I was out riding my bike on the shoulder out toward the back gate when a car came within a foot of hitting me. The driver was on the phone in the middle of the day, and was clearly not paying attention to the road ahead of them.
 
I would like to take the opportunity to remind the drivers in our community that as the weather gets warmer and people get back out on the road to please watch out for road bikers. A lot of the roads out here (Bandelier, truck route in places, state road 4) have very very narrow shoulders, requiring bikes to ride out in the lane a little.

New Mexico Breaks Another Record In Export Growth

ALBUQUERQUE—Gov. Susana Martinez has announced a record-breaking year of export growth in New Mexico.

The state’s total exports set an all-time high in 2014, increasing by more than $1 billion compared to 2013 figures. Exports to Mexico also set an all-time high of $1.549 billion, nearly doubling in one year.
