LAHS Swimmers Compete in State Finals Today
LAHS News:
The New Mexico High School State Swimming Championship is being held this weekend at Albuquerque Academy, with teams from all over the state sending their best to represent their schools.
Each swimmer must qualify for the event they are competing in prior to the state meet, and are allowed to swim in only two individual events and two relays.
The top 16 swimmers from the qualifying round go on to compete for team points during the finals – which is happening today.

Art Opening Marks Proud Moment for Pinon Students
The bubbly flowed as young artists soaked in the excitement of their first art opening Friday evening at Village Arts at 216 DP Road. Hors d’oeuvre trays filled with grapes, crackers and cheese coupled with glasses of sparkling cider served by owner Ken Nebel enhanced the magical atmosphere for Pinon Elementary School students who mingled among community members, sharing the inspirations for their work. Allison and Melanie Bennett presented a $500 check Tuesday to Kiwanis President Don Casperson for Kiwanis programs that benefit children. Bennett’s Fine Jewelry and Gifts created a December fundraiser during its Holiday Open House in which for three days the store sold cake slices for $5. House Delivers $5.9 Billion Budget Now Headed to Senate
STATE News:
SANTA FE – The House of Representatives has passed a budget for the next spending year that begins July 2013. HB 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 would provide $5.907 billion in state spending, an increase of $255 million over this year’s budget.
That amount includes both recurring and non-recurring items. The total appropriations contained in the bills would leave the state with reserves of $589.2 million or 10 percent of fiscal year 2014 recurring appropriation levels next fiscal year.

Community Broadband Meeting Wrap Up

Some 30 citizens attended a meeting Feb. 20 regarding recommended design of the Community Broadband Network by Los Alamos County.
An update on this last-mile, open-access, fiber optic network project as well as the finance mechanisms proposed by the business plan was discussed.

SANTA FE – House Bill 272 passed the New Mexico House of Representatives Thursday with a vote of 65 to 0.
HB 272 was introduced by Rep. Phillip Archuleta (D-Dona Ana-36) to help disabled New Mexico veterans get free elk hunting licenses.
Archuleta recognizes veterans’ commitment and service to New Mexico and the United States and wants to show them thanks.
This program would be monitored by the Game and Fish Department to make sure licenses are given out in a fair manner.
