U.S. Congressional News:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District highlighted a new report that was released by the Obama Administration that reinforces the need to prevent the sequester’s indiscriminate cuts from taking place.
The cuts are scheduled to begin on Friday, and threaten to harm the economy and result in significant job losses in New Mexico and around the country.
The sequester was part of the Budget Control Act of 2011, which Luján voted against.

Letter to the Editor: N.M. 502 18 MPH?
By WILLIAM C. MEADThe New Mexico Department of Transportation held an open house Feb. 20 to solicit comments on the latest conceptual design for N.M. 502.
This might be the last opportunity for public comment on the major features of the road. I didn’t count, but I’d guess there were roughly 50-75 people in attendance.
That seems like a pretty small sample on which to base a decision that affects everyone in Los Alamos (though less so for White Rock residents.)
I think the single design feature that most determines the nature and quality of the road is the proposed roundabout Read More

Winter Storm Continues in New Mexico
Courtesy/NWS
NWS News:
Blizzard conditions continue to impact far east-central New Mexico early this morning, especially areas between Tucumcari and the Clovis and Portales areas.
Snowfall levels of 8″-10″ have been reported in these areas, but needless to say, measuring snow in 50-plus mph winds is extremely difficult.
Regardless, the impacts of this major winter storm have been widespread and significant. The I-40 corridor, as expected, appears to have seen the greatest impacts.
The latest indications are that the heaviest snow bands will shift farther east into the Texas Read More

Great Skis, Great Skiing, to Great Organizations – From Personal Development to Organizational Development Part I
Column by ELENA YANG
I have been working on four books for the past few weeks; two are about personal development and the other two are about organizations (see listing below.)
The overlapping messages are generally about living with passion, learning to release creative energy, staying disciplined and having fun.
On a recent skiing trip, they began to meld together for me. So, this entry is both personal and organizational.

Thoughts From the Big Chair“Ziggy and Brubeck and Crocs, Oh My!”
Hey gang! This week, I think I’m going to stick to a couple shorter topics on different ends of the Reality Show continuum…
The Grammys
The Grammys were on last week and I managed to watch a good deal of the telecast over a few days using the old DVR.
It’s tough to watch the whole program at one time because, as with most Hollywood awards shows, it overflows with lots of ego, over-hyped records and performances, and, of course, mindless banter. Read More

Members of the Los Alamos FIRST Robotics Team 4153 from left, Jacob Marks, Ariel Koh, Steve Anton, Simon Redmond and George Barnum conduct the final assembly Feb. 19 of this year’s robot, which throws frisbees at targets and climbs pipe pyramids. It’s a lot more complicated than last year’s bot that shot basketballs and balanced on treadles. This year’s robot had to be completed by midnight, Feb. 19 and locked into a plastic bag with locker ties. Staff report
Department of Public Utilities Manager John Arrowsmith spoke to the Los Alamos Kiwanis Club at its lunch meeting Tuesday, Feb. 19.
Arrowsmith presented an overview of the NEDO PV Smart Grid project. Everyone wants renewable power, but the challenge is that solar is available 24 percent of the time, wind 30-40 percent of the time and hydro 30 percent of the time, he said.
It is still necessary to have traditional power sources for the times when the renewable power can’t be generated, Arrowsmith said. Read More

Column: Trinity Drive and the Entrance to Town … What are Your Thoughts?
Column by KRISTIN HENDERSONTrinity Drive and the entrance to town … what are your thoughts?
This process has been going on for years – but is coming to a conclusion now and your input is needed.
The short (ish) of it is, Trinity Drive is really, as we know, N.M. 502 – a state highway. We are on the schedule to get funding for the stretch just before the pool into town to Knecht Street – just past where all the dirt is torn up for Trinity Site.
Funding is available essentially now and the road could be re-done in the next year.
