Governor Signs E-cigarettes Child Safety Legislation

STATE News:

Gov. Susana Martinez signed legislation Wednesday to help protect New Mexico’s children from e-cigarettes and liquid nicotine products.

Senate Bill 433, sponsored by Sen. John Ryan, R-Albuquerque, will prohibit the sale of e-cigarettes to minors and requires retail liquid nicotine packages to be sold in child-resistant containers. If a child consumes liquid nicotine, it can be fatal.

House Bill 213, sponsored by Rep. Sarah Maestas Barnes, R-Albuquerque, also requires child-resistant packaging for liquid nicotine products.

Adams State University Taps McClure As President

The New Mexico Association of Commerce and Industry (ACI) announced Thursday that its president and CEO, Dr. Beverlee McClure, has accepted the position of president of Adams State University in Colorado.

ACI Board Chair Dan Girand congratulated McClure.  “Beverlee has done an outstanding job leading and growing ACI for almost a decade.  She has worked tirelessly to strengthen New Mexico’s economy, and our state is better for her contributions.”

Prescribed Burn In Santa Fe Watershed Postponed

SFNF News:

Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest cancelled plans to conduct a prescribed burn in the lower portion of the Santa Fe Municipal Watershed next week based on the wind forecast and concerns for firefighter and public safety. 

According to the National Weather Service, winds may range from 10 to 40 miles per hour next week, significantly increasing the likelihood of area Red Flag Warnings, which alert firefighting and land management agencies to short-term weather conditions that may result in extreme fire behavior.

The inmates built a hoop house for Turquoise Trail Charter School in Santa Fe. The hoop house will provide the children at the school with the opportunity to grow and harvest their own fruits and vegetables.

The North Central Regional Transit District has joined more than 240 organizations and community groups throughout the U.S. to call for action as expiration of Federal Transportation Bill approaches May 31.

Congratulations to the Los Alamos Middle School Track and Field Team for competing in the West Las Vegas Invitational Track Meet.
 
With a small squad of only 21 over Spring Break, the boys team earned a dominating first place overall.
 
The girls team of 27 took home second place.
