Regional Coalition Of LANL Communities Gathers Friday Morning In Española

The Regional Coalition Of LANL Communities (RCLC) met Friday morning in the Española City Chambers at 405 N. Paseo de Oñate.

RCLC members heard an update on activities of the New Mexico Congressional Delegation. The members also heard presentations from Assistant Manager Pete Maggiore of NNSA’s Environmental Projects Office at the Los Alamos Field Office and LANL Community Programs Deputy Director Carole Rutten.

The Regional Coalition of LANL Communities proactively addresses issues of the neighboring cities, counties and pueblos directly affected by LANL site activities. By working together, our governments are better poised to define the public interest and to work with DOE, NNSA, contractors and Congress to ensure that state and federal policies protect and promote local interests.

The Regional Coalition of LANL Communities is comprised of eight cities, counties and pueblos surrounding the Department of Energy’s Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).   Founded in 2011, the Regional Coalition works in partnership to create one voice to ensure national decisions incorporate local needs and concerns. The organization’s focus is environmental remediation, regional economic development and site employment, and adequate funding for LANL.

The Regional Coalition was formed through a Joint Powers Agreement and all of the participating municipalities provide funding for the Regional Coalition’s operating budget. In addition, the Regional Coalition receives funding from the Department of Energy to further its mission of environmental remediation.

The Board of Directors includes Chair, Española Mayor Alice Lucero; Vice-Chair, Taos Councilor Andrew Gonzales; Sect./Treas. Santa Fe Mayor Javier Gonzales; Los Alamos County Councilor Steven Girrens; Santa Fe County Commissioner Henry Roybal; Rio Arriba County Commissioner Barney Trujillo; Taos County Commissioner Mark Gallegos; Pueblo of Ohkay Owingeh Representative Ron Lovator and a Representative from Pueblo of Jemez to be determined.

The next scheduled meeting of the RCLC is 9-11 a.m. Friday, May 8, in Taos City or County Chambers to be determined.
