Letter To The Editor: Response To ‘Why Ban Single-use Carryout Plastic Bags’

Thank you Mark for providing a prime example why I quit supporting the Sierra Club in the late 1980s.
You start out by stating the U.S. consumed over 100 billion plastic bags in 2009. That sounds like a good number considering that 5 trillion of these bags were consumed world-wide, at a rate of 2-2.5 percent, U.S. consumption of the overall amount compared to the U.S. representing 4.5 percent of the population. In 2008-2009 a group of kids in grades 4-6 (the Kinnikinnick Club) wanted to do something for the world. They researched small actions that could have a large effect and decided to ask Smith’s to encourage the use of cloth bags instead of paper or plastic. They gave a nice presentation to the Smith’s employees and Smith’s put up the signs you see now Read More
