Jemez Mountain Trail Runs Announces Raffle For Secundino Sandoval Original Painting

The 10th Annual Jemez Mountain Trails Runs are scheduled for Saturday, May 23.

This year’s poster art is an original watercolor by Secundino Sandoval. All runners and volunteers get a poster. We are raffling off the original with framing by Village Arts to benefit the race. Tickets are $5 each or five tickets for $20. Tickets can be purchased at Village Arts, Fusion Multisport, and CB FOX. Drawing will be May 22 at the pre-race dinner.

Valles Caldera Trust Plans Prescribed Burn For Valle Grande

JEMEZ SPRINGS – The Valles Caldera Trust is looking for an opportunity to conduct a prescribed burn project on the Valles Caldera National Preserve in April or early May. 

The project will last for 1-3 days. The prescribed burn will target up to 1,471 acres of grassland in the Valle Grande, adjacent to N.M. 4 near mile marker 39.2. If conditions are suitable to implement the burn, some traffic delays may occur during the ignition phases of the burn but road closures are not expected.

Alyce M. Sutton, 81, a resident of Los Alamos, passed away of natural causes on Wednesday, April 1, 2015. 

Alyce was born in Revere, Massachusetts where she met and married her childhood sweetheart, John T. Sutton Sr., in September of 1956. Alyce was a devoted wife to her husband as well as a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. In 1972 they moved to Los Alamos, NM, where Alyce immediately became involved in the community.

SFNF Issues Order Prohibiting Underage Drinking

SANTA FE In order to provide for public health and safety, protect resources and comply with state law on underage drinking, the Santa Fe National Forest issued an order prohibiting the consumption of alcoholic beverages by anyone under the age of 21 within Forest boundaries.

The order, which is in effect until April 30, 2017, allows Forest Service law enforcement personnel to issue citations to violators. While the possibility of joint management of the preserve by the National Park Service and Jemez Pueblo is possibly a good idea: I am against the holding, by the National Park Service, of the Valles “in trust” for the pueblo.

The Pueblo have repeatedly tried and failed to gain control of the Valles through the courts and appears to now be attempting to create facts on the ground as a method of eventually gaining control.

State Police Seek Help With Hit And Run Crash

SANTA FE COUNTY – The New Mexico State Police (NMSP) is seeking the public’s assistance in the investigation of a hit and run crash, which resulted in severe injuries to an 18-year-old male from Santa Fe.

At around 8:45 p.m., Friday, April 3, Christian Diaz was walking the pilgrimage along N.M. 503 to El Santuario de Chimayó. He was struck by a vehicle driving northbound on N.M. 503 near milepost 2. 

Witnesses on scene described the hit and run vehicle as a white, early to middle-2000 year model Toyota pickup, possibly a Tacoma model.
