IRS Guidance On How To Claim Wrongful-Incarceration Exclusion

PHOENIX  The Internal Revenue Service recently released guidelines on how wrongfully-incarcerated taxpayers can take advantage of the new retroactive exclusion from income for any civil damages, restitution or other monetary award received in connection with their incarceration.
 
The guidelines are contained in a set of frequently-asked questions, posted to IRS.gov. According to the FAQs, taxpayers who in the past received payments related to their wrongful incarceration and included those payments in taxable income can now file a refund claim

Joseph “Buddy” Kosty 83, died peacefully after a long decline with dementia related illness in Roanoke, VA. on July 2, 2016.

Joe is remembered by many as an outgoing, caring man, full of life, always ready with a quick joke or light banter to those who encountered him. A native of Rahway, NJ, Joe joined the Air Force in 1951 after High School, and served during the Korean Conflict as an Aircraft Technician in the 55th Wing of the Strategic Air Command.

San Juan County Business Owners Face Federal Health Care Fraud Charges

ALBUQUERQUE – U.S. Attorney Damon P. Martinez and Special Agent in Charge Waldemar Rodriguez of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in El Paso announced the filing of health care fraud charges against two San Juan County residents.
 
Cory Werito, 32, of Farmington and Rosita Toledo, 46, of Kirtland are charged in a 10-count indictment filed June 15, 2016. Werito and Toledo were arrested June 28, 2016, by Deputy U.S. Marshals and made their initial appearances on the indictment in federal court June 28 in Farmington. Both remained in custody pending arraignment

Singer-songwriter Jim Scott brings his “Pete Seeger Songfest” to the Unitarian Church of Los Alamos at 7 p.m. Friday, July 15 at 1738 N. Sage St. Admission is $15 at the door.

Scott’s concert in Los Alamos will focus on the music of the late folk legend, Pete Seeger. Scott collaborated on many projects with Seeger, and leads a celebration of Seeger’s and his own songs of earth, justice and peace. A prolific composer in his own right, Scott’s guitar skill and infectious manner brought Seeger to call him “some kind of magician.”
