Obituary: Donna Mae Tubbs June 26, 2016

DONNA MAE TUBBS June 26, 2016

Few of you were privileged to meet my mother. Mom lived in our community, with me, for only four short months. With Mom’s consent, my brother, sister, and I brought her to White Rock from Pennsylvania, where my siblings live and Mom lived her entire life. Our mutual goal was for Mom to have the best quality of life for as long as possible.

Over the thirty-six years I have lived here, Mom visited many times. We shared great adventures during her visits, throughout New Mexico, into Colorado, and as far west as the Grand Canyon. Mom admired the mission and work of Best Friends Read More

“The FBI has zero tolerance for public corruption,” said Derek Fuller, FBI assistant special agent in charge for criminal matters. “No matter where you are in New Mexico, urban Read More

Letter To The Editor: Biggest 4th Of July Thanks Ever!

By STEVE BOERIGTER
Kiwanis 4th of July Celebration Chair

The 2016 4th of July Celebration at Overlook Park was the best ever. A good rain a few days earlier led to clear skies and green fields. While we had some brief periods of wind in earlier evening, the sky settled down for a great show. Seeing the skydivers, especially the big flag as the sun was setting was spectacular. Sim Balkey had a huge crowd dancing on the field. Based upon our unofficial receipts, this was the biggest Independence Day Celebration in Los Alamos history. Probably the single biggest Los Alamos community event ever!

Letter To The Editor: The Tragedy Of The Commons, Part II

By GEORGE CHANDLER
Los Alamos

Ralph Chapman recently observed that the intensification of residential uses in existing single-family residential areas that is currently being advocated by the Community Development Department (CDD) and some members of the Planning and Zoning Commission perfectly illustrates the “tragedy of the commons.” I couldn’t agree more.

The CDD introduced this intensification into the discussion of the Comprehensive Plan when it salted the recent survey with questions about the use of “casitas,” “granny houses,” or “guest houses” to ease the supposed (undocumented) Read More

PEEC Amateur Naturalist: Mr. Holmes And The Geometry Of Dandelions

By ROBERT DRYJA
Los Alamos

Holmes now was particularly restless as a result of two events. First, he had just deduced that a particular diamond was a copy due to the angles of its facets. The angles had not matched the angles of the genuine article. Second, it was summer and he wanted to conduct his weekly explorations of the Jemez Mountains. I anticipated he would make some connection between geometry of the diamonds and what he observed as we hiked along a trail.
