Governor Announces Record Year For State Parks

STATE News:

SANTA FE — Today, Gov. Susana Martinez announced that more people are visiting New Mexico’s state parks than ever before.

Last year, New Mexico state parks welcomed more than 5 million visitors – 1 million more than 2014. The announcement comes on the heels of the Governor announcing record-breaking tourism numbers for the fourth consecutive year.

As part of the celebration of Bandelier National Monument’s 100th birthday and the Centennial of the National Park Service, Bandelier held a reunion Saturday, July 23, inviting present and former employees as well as anyone with close personal connections to the park.

Meet The Orphaned Bear Cubs!

Dr. Kathleen Ramsay received the two orphaned bear cubs June 25 from the Valles Caldera National Preserve. (Their mother had been euthanized following an attack on a local runner who unknowingly passed beetween her and the cubs.)

Weighing in at about 10 pounds each, Dr. Ramsay went to work to get the cubs used to their new diet of “mush” and fruit, veggies and dog food.

Now, less than a month later, Valley Girl and Cowboy are well over 20 pounds and full of playful energy.

DEA: Counterfeit Pills Fueling Fentanyl; Opioid Crisis

WASHINGTON, D.C.  Hundreds of thousands of counterfeit prescription pills, many containing deadly amounts of fentanyl and fentanyl-related compounds, have made their way into the U.S. drug market, according to a DEA intelligence report released Friday.
 
Law enforcement nationwide report higher fentanyl availability, seizures, and known overdose deaths than at any other time since the drug’s creation in 1959. 
 
Fentanyl is a synthetically produced opioid that, when produced and administered legitimately, is used to treat severe pain.

Shame on Los Alamos National Bank for the way they have handled their upgrade to a new banking system.
 
They made no effort to facilitate the changeover for customers’ online transactions at all. They should have done a software fix to transfer payees, wires, transfers and other recurring online transactions, but instead left the burden on their customers.

WIPP Update: Backup Power Installed For WIPP EOC

WIPP News:
 
The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant’s (WIPP) Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will soon have guaranteed operation in the event of a power outage.
 
A 1,250-kilowatt diesel generator is being installed at the Skeen-Whitlock Building, the location of the EOC. The generator is designed to automatically start when a disruption in power is detected. While the primary purpose of the generator is to ensure emergency response capabilities for the EOC in the event of a power loss, the generator will also power the entire building.

Lubella “Lubbie” Martinez, 62, a resident of Cordova passed away on Thursday, July 21, 2016 from a lengthy illness.

Robert (Bobby) Steedle, 50, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away on July 23, 2016 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

SANTA FE – Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest are planning to conduct two prescribed burns on the Coyote Ranger District this fall.

The 5,041-acre French Mesa treatment area is approximately 10 miles north of Gallina and the 470-acre Mesa Potrero pile burn located approximately seven miles northwest of the community of Coyote.
