Udall: NM Tech to Receive $700,000 for Energy Research

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM) Wednesday announced that the Petroleum Recovery Research Center (PRRC) at New Mexico Tech in Socorro will receive nearly $700,000 to continue developing a method to treat water that is produced in oil and gas production using solar energy.

‘Produced water’ flows to the surface during oil and gas drilling and often has high concentrations of salts and other contaminants that make it unusable and costly to dispose of safely.

Bandelier Rangers and National Guard Rescue Distressed Hikers

BANDELIER News:

On Tuesday, June 19 Bandelier Rangers with the assistance of National Guard air support, conducted a successful search and rescue operation in the area between Alamo Canyon and Capulin Canyon.

Sandoval County 911 Center received a cell call Tuesday morning from a group in distress and requesting aid in the backcountry of Bandelier National Monument.

Sandoval County provided Bandelier personnel with the call’s GPS coordinates, and Bandelier Archaeologist/Rangers Heath Bailey and David Shiffler, who were already in the vicinity, immediately responded.

AUDIO: Udall Discusses Farm Bill & Burn Pit Registry

WASHINGTON – On his weekly radio call today, U.S. Sen. Tom Udall discussed the Farm Bill reauthorization currently being considered in the Senate, including two amendments he plans to introduce to the bill.

Udall also talked about his upcoming Veterans’ Affairs Committee testimony this Wednesday on legislation to create a registry for veterans who may be suffering health problems due to their proximity to open-air burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Santa Fe National Forest Launches New Website

This morning the Santa National Forest launched a new website. The forest’s new web address is:https:////fs.usda.gov/santafe.

The Santa Fe National Forest is one of the five National Forests in New Mexico.

National Forests are America’s great outdoors, here to serve the American people at work and play.

Some of the finest mountain scenery in the Southwest is found in the 1.6 million acre Santa Fe National Forest.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall today welcomed a decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to forego adding the Dunes Sagebrush (Sand Dune) Lizard to the Endangered Species List.

Colorado Peak: 246 acres,100 percent contained. The Colorado Peak fire is located on the Española Ranger District, Santa Fe NF; approximately 10 miles northwest of the Santa Fe Airport

Bear Springs: 622 acres, 95 percent contained. No change. The Bear Springs fire is located on the Jemez Ranger District, Santa Fe NF; 6 miles NE of Ponderosa and 6 miles SE of Jemez Springs. Read More

Los Alamos Day at NM History Museum Saturday

On Saturday afternoon, June 16, the New Mexico History Museum and its Los Compadres del Palacio support group will host a visit to the Museum for all Los Alamos County residents.

The event will begin at 1:30 p.m., with an informal reception at the Museum.

At 2:15 p.m., Los Alamos visitors are invited to participate in a tour of the St. Johns Bible exhibition led by Tom Leech, head of the Palace Press.

Fire and Water: The Las Conchas Fire

On June 4 and 5, I attended a conference “Impacts and Lessons Learned from the Las Conchas Fire,” sponsored by New Mexico’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (NM EPSCoR–https:////nmepscor.org/).

NM EPSCoR is funded by the National Science Foundation, and this year their focus was to research the impacts of climate change on Northern New Mexico water resources.

The Las Conchas Fire broadened their focus to the environmental impacts of wildfire–with water and water quality as an important subtext. Read More
