Fire Near Redondo Campground Fully Contained – Stage 1 Fire Restrictions Implemented

A half acre, no structure fire was fully contained Thursday. The fire occured one half mile south of the Redondo Campground. The fire was visible from north of Albuquerque, Jemez Springs, Gilman, Jemez Pueblo and from N.M. 4.

Fuels on the ground are dry due to the lack of moisture and are creating a fair amount of smoke. A fire investigator is also on scene. The fire was in the Jemez Ranger District.

Los Alamos County Fire and Smoking Restrictions
Effective June 1, 2012

Building, maintaining or using an open fire is prohibited on all Los Alamos County lands except within developed campsites (concrete pad with metal fire ring), metal grills using charcoal or propane are acceptable on North Mesa campgrounds, at Overlook Park and at any park within Los Alamos County.

Smoking is prohibited except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least 3-feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials. Read More

Free Shuttle Service Transports Visitors to Bandelier

A free shuttle service operated by Atomic City Transit is the only way in which visitors will have access to Bandelier National Monument this summer through November, Park Superintendent Jason Lott said.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M. announced Wednesday that New Mexico will receive nearly $1.6 million to support AmeriCorps projects across the state.

Whitewater-Baldy Complex Fire Grows to 170,272 Acres

The Whitewater-Baldy Complex Fire has grown to 170,272 acres, which makes it the largest fire in New Mexico history. Last summer’s Las Conchas fire burned 156,293 acres.

The fire has continued to spread in all directions as it remains active on more than 95 percent of the perimeter.

Firefighters are working on the line around the fire to provide the buffer needed to minimize the spread.
