Monday marks the 15th anniversary of the Cerro Grande Fire.

The disastrous fire began as a controlled burn, and became uncontrolled due to high winds and drought conditions. More than 400 families in Los Alamos lost their homes in the resulting 48,000-acre fire. Structures at Los Alamos National Laboratory were also destroyed or damaged but there was no loss of human life. Los Alamos County Police Launch Safety Town Program

LAPD News:

Los Alamos Police Department is welcoming applications for the inaugural Los Alamos County Safety Town.

This free program will run 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday June 15-26 at Mountain Elementary School. This program is open to children entering Kindergarten in August.

County Hazard Mitigation Plan Public Meeting May 19

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County is finalizing its Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP). This will be an update to the 2006 plan. 

The purpose of this LHMP update is to assess risk to natural hazards, implement actions to reduce future losses, and maintain eligibility for federal mitigation funds in accordance with the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000.
