Jennifer Bartram, coordinator of the Los Alamos Teen Court, provided an interesting summary of her work during a Feb. 3 talk to Kiwanis.

She handed out a one-page flyer, which included the following basic description:

FBI Offers $1,000 Reward On Anniversary Of Counselor, New Mexico Killing

FBI News:

The FBI is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of a Counselor, New Mexico man a year ago.

Wilson Joe Chiquito was killed sometime between the evening hours of Feb. 14, 2014, and noon Feb. 15, 2014, at his residence on the Navajo Indian Reservation.

The cause of death was blunt force trauma to his head. He was 75 at the time of his death. The FBI, Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety and New Mexico State Police responded to the scene.

Deer Trap Canyon Pile Burn Saturday-Monday

Los Alamos Fire Department and the Santa Fe National Forest plan to conduct a prescribed Saturday through Monday in Deer Trap Canyon.

The burn will occur if conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather forecasts, are favorable. 

The Deer Trap Canyon prescribed pile burn will be conducted east of Los Alamos. Small blocks may be treated each day to decrease the daily smoke volume.

Prescribed fires are one of the most effective tools available to resource managers for restoring fire-dependent ecosystems. Read More

I-25 Southbound Lane Closure Until 3 P.M. Today

NMDOT News:

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) will be completing road pavement assessment today on the I-25 southbound lanes from mile marker 265 to mile marker 267 near La Bajada Hill.

There will be a one lane closure on the I-25 southbound lanes until 3 p.m. and speed will be reduced to 55 mph.

Drivers are urged to proceed with caution through the work zone, observe traffic control signs and reduce speed to the posted limit. Updates on this project will be posted on the New Mexico Department of Transportation’s road advisory website www.nmroads.com. Read More

The New Mexico Motor Transportation Police implemented a “soft launch” Thursday of its new oversize/overweight permitting system.

This system, named “New Mexico Operating Permit System” (NM-OPS) was built for the Motor Transportation Police Department (MTPD) for the purpose of allowing the commercial trucking industry to self-issue nearly all of the required permits on-line.

I-25 /Old Pecos Trail Interchange: Earthwork Operations

NMDOT News:

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) maintenance crews began earthwork operations today on the northbound I-25/Old Pecos Trail Interchange at mile marker 284.  

Motorists are being alerted that there will be heavy truck traffic at the I-25/Old Pecos Trail Interchange. Haul trucks will be loading and hauling material near the I-25 northbound ramp. 

This project is anticipated to be completed Feb. 16, weather permitting.

To all those who think a lack of 322 vaccinations is risky, please stay off the roads then, because driving on the roads is risky, and I worry about your safety.  

I do have the right not to get vaccinated and to concurrently attend public spaces, just like you have the right to coddle your fragility and not attend public spaces.

Life itself is a big risk. Perhaps extremely risk-averse individuals are not up to the task. But, keep mooing as part of any herd you like. I’ll pass on being part of any herd.
