Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘The Fault in Our Stars’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB
Los Alamos

“The Fault in Our Stars” is winning market share at the box office these days. This film, based on the novel by John Green, is immensely popular with young adults and teenagers.  Yet, the story has a message for anyone with a tender heart who has wondered at the “fairness” of terminal cancer, or of any death that cuts short a life. Rather than being depressing, this movie takes viewers on an uplifting journey.

This week we are opening The Fault in our Stars and How to Train your Dragon 2. We will hold Edge of Tomorrow, and Maleficent. X-Men, and A Million Ways to Die in the West will end this Thursday.

We had so many requests for The Fault in our Stars we managed to get a second-week print which is almost impossible, so here it is. Come and see it. Unfortunately, we had to pass on 22 Jump St. for now, but hope to open it in a couple of weeks if we have room. It was a difficult decision.

Family Secrets Make Up ‘City Island’ Plot

Review by KELLY DOLEJSI

“If we only knew each other’s secrets, what comforts we should find.” So says John Churton Collins, who has nothing to do with this week’s screening at Mesa Public Library. Nevertheless, “City Island” (2009, PG-13), echoes the long-dead English literary critic’s pithy dictum.

Writer/director Raymond De Felitta’s farcical drama centers, as all good farcical dramas should, on a family. Families are always full of buffoonery and ridiculously improbable situations, and the film’s Rizzo family is Read More

This week we are opening Maleficent, andA Million Ways to Die in the West. We will hold X-Men: Days of Future Past, Godzilla, and Blended. Blended has only one matinee each day so do check our schedule. Million Dollar Arm will end this Thursday.

From what I’ve seen of our two new movies, Maleficent lead by Angelina Jolie, and Elle Fanning, should be great fun for all ages while A Million Ways to Die in the West is both hilarious and vulgar, so I would give it a fairly strong R rating. Read More

Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” may fall into the same genre of superhero movies as “Spiderman 2”, which played last week here in town, but that is where any similarity between the two films ends.

Admittedly, this is an entertaining genre but my qualifications critiquing it are few. Like many people, I don’t have the backstory on these characters (especially Mystique, Beast, Quicksilver, Wolverine, even Professor X and Magneto) beyond what the film itself tells us.

Cinema Cindy Reviews ‘Million Dollar Arm’

By CYNTHIA BIDDLECOMB

“Million Dollar Arm,” as a Disney production, was almost guaranteed to have a happy ending. But little did I expect it to be touching! This is a sports film that non-fans can enjoy.

The cross-cultural story and scenes in India are captivating. Having lived among a subset of the Indian culture, I giggled through much of this part of the film.

In fact, we get a quick tour in India itself, as the protagonist, an independent sports agent, seeks new talent for the next Read More
