United Way Executive Director has Retired

United Way News:

Donna Schroeder has told the Los Alamos Daily Post today that she has retired from her position as executive director of the United Way of Northern New Mexico.

“I’ve been here almost six years and I’ve seen a lot of changes and a lot of things happen during that time,” Schroeder said. “My dream was to put 2-1-1 in Los Alamos and that has been accomplished. Also, my mother is 92 years old and lives in North Carolina and she is having some challenges and I really don’t want to be this for away from her now.”

Atomic City Road Runners To Begin 39th Season

The Atomic City Road Runners (ACRR) will open the 2012 season at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 3 at the Canyon Rim Trail off East Road (Route # 502).
 
ACRR is a family-oriented running and walking club that meets every Tuesday during the Daylight Saving Time season for a pace race in which members predict their own time. 
 
Anyone can be a winner if his/her finish time is closest to that predicted.

PEEC’s Star, Planet and Telescope Party Set for Monday

For all those adults, kids and families who missed last week’s PEEC Star Party or would like to see more, PEEC astronomers are going to repeat it at 7 p.m. Monday March 26.

One highlight will be the crescent Moon of four days old, which should be pretty spectacular through the telescope.  

Venus, Jupiter and Mars will still be there, and the Orion Nebula will be well placed for a great view including its “arms.”  

Venus is best seen in twilight because its extreme brightness dazzles the telescope viewer.

Gas Pumps Removed at Shamrock Gas Station

The Los Alamos County Planning and Zoning Commission approved a site plan for a Smith’s fuel center to be built at the existing Shamrock gas station site at 1239 Trinity Dr.

Smith’s will lease the property at the corner of Trinity Drive and Knecht Street from Polk JT Properties.

Smith’s new fuel center will be adjacent to the Smith’s Marketplace store in Trinity Place.

The new fuel center will allow Smith’s reward cardholders to purchase discounted gas.

N.M. 4 Paving Falls Behind Due to Hot Mix Plant Problem

This is the back end of a machine called the “Shuttle Buggy” that has been parked at La Vista and N.M. 4. Bottom-dump semi trucks drop a line of the asphalt mix down the center of the road they are about to pave. The Shuttle Buggy comes along and scoops the asphalt up, mixes it, and deposits the prepared asphalt mix out the conveyor on the back end into the waiting maw of the paving (lay-down) machine. Recognizing that the need for donations is greater than ever at local food banks across the nation, Curves International is kicked off the 2012 Curves Food Drive on March 1 with a challenge to all Curves Clubs to meet or exceed last year’s donations. Rocky has personality plus! He is a very high energy dog that loves to run and play. Petfinder says no kids but he would do okay with older kids rather than younger children.Rocky is a small 3-year-old neutered male dog who came to the shelter when his owner moved. He is friendly, enthusiastic, energetic and is probablytoo bouncy for small children. He is good with dogs. His behavior with cats is not known.
