A New Nature Center – A Natural Fit for Los Alamos

As Los Alamos considers the merits and possibility of building a municipal nature center, it is worth considering the genesis of the idea and the value that it adds to our community.  

Back in 1999 a large group of citizens gathered in Fuller Lodge to express their interest in a Los Alamos Nature Center. Saturday night featured the closest and largest full moon of this year.

Astronomers call it a perigee full moon.

The word perigee describes the moon’s closest point to Earth for a given month.

Youth Work Party for Lock-In

The Family YMCA is offering a free lock-in night to youth groups who provide up to 15 youth and adult volunteers for 5-hours during a work party on May 12. The offer is limited, so groups must respond by May 9.

Y facility manager David Clark is coordinating the work that will include landscaping, planting, raking and spring clean-up.  The Lock-In is for overnight use of the Y during closed hours, and allows groups access to most of the facility for games one night during the year. The Family YMCA’s Earth Service Corps YESC program started in 2001 following the Cerro Grande fire with the goal of providing an opportunity for youth to assist in repairing trails.

The Delle Foundation is a Los Alamos-based foundation started by Helen and George Cowan.

Helen Cowan, who passed away in 2011, was an avid hiker and was a devotee of local trails.

Learn Local Wildflowers with PEEC

PEEC’s popular evening wildflower walks with Chick Keller are starting again. The first walk with be 5:30 p.m., Thursday May 10. Participants can meet at PEEC, 3540 Orange St., to carpool to the trailhead. The walks are free and open to the public, with no registration required.

Bandelier Seeks Public Input on Management of Tsankawi Unit

Bandelier National Monument is initiating a planning effort to improve resource protection and visitor understanding of the unique Tsankawi Unit.

The resulting decisions will provide guidance and direction for managing visitor safety, accessibility and resource protection for the next 10 years.

Pancakes, Arts & Crafts this Saturday

The Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos is hosting a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, May 5th at the Betty Ehart Senior Center from 7 – 11 am.  Stop by for a delicious breakfast of eggs, sausage and pancakes before heading over to the lawn at Fuller Lodge for the Los Alamos Arts Council’s Arts and Crafts Fair.  

The Los Alamos Arts Council has presented arts and crafts fairs in Los Alamos since 1967. The Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos was founded in January 1948. It is the oldest service organization in Los Alamos.
