Forest Hosts Public Meetings on Southwest Jemez Mountains Landscape Restoration Project

Santa Fe — The Santa Fe National Forest is hosting a series of public meetings about the Southwest Jemez Mountains Landscape Restoration project and encourages the public to attend any of them.
Forest managers wish to reduce the threat of high-intensity, potentially-destructive wildfires by restoring natural processes in the project area.
A variety of treatments will be proposed including prescribed fires, mechanically thinning trees, and improving watershed function and wildlife habitat.

Wednesday’s Downpour Spurs Back Road Flash Flood
Looking down from Omega Bridge, a grader and front end loader work on West Road near the Ice Rink to clear debris from the flash flood Wednesday evening. The creek coming down Los Alamos Canyon from the Reservoir becomes a raging torrent that uses the roadway as a streambed in flash-flood conditions. Clean up from that flash flood got underway quickly on N.M. 501 (Back Road) following Wednesday’s downpour. 2012 High Mountain Mudfest Mud Volleyball Tournament Set for July 21

The Los Alamos County Recreation Division is hosting the 8th Annual High Mountain Mudfest Mud Volleyball Tournament Saturday, July 21 at the North Mesa Mud Pits.
Games start at 9 a.m., and each team must have six to 12 players, with a minimum of four women.
The cost is $130 per team. The deadline for registration is 5 p.m., Thursday July 19.

A delegation of New Mexico business leaders will travel to Washington D.C. July 16 and 17 to discuss the importance of Los Alamos National Laboratory to the state’s economy.

Bandelier Reduces Fire Restrictions to Stage I

Bandelier National Monument Superintendent Jason Lott has announced that effective this evening, Stage II Fire Restrictions no longer apply for Bandelier National Monument.
These restrictions are reduced to Stage I in light of the increase in moisture and reduction of fire danger.
Under Stage I Fire Restrictions, smoking outside of vehicles, open campfires outside of developed campsites, and fireworks are prohibited.

Flooding Washes Away Bandelier’s Temporary Bridges

The storm that came through this area Wednesday evening brought flooding that temporarily closed N.M. 501 and sections of N.M. 4.
The new ashy-black mud along Frijoles Creek shows how high the water was running here.
The trails are open, and lots of people are visiting, but the three temporary bridges along the trail to Alcove House and the second bridge on the Falls Trail washed away – time for wet feet!

West Road Closed Today for Debris Cleanup
COUNTY News:
The Los Alamos County Public Works Department reports that Wednesday’s rain storm resulted in about a foot of water flowing through Los Alamos Canyon and the Ice Rink parking lot.
County crews had completed barrier work around the rink in June to provide protective measures to the Rink, and the barriers held up well – no water entered the Ice Rink and there is no damage to that structure.
Pavement Division Manager Tom Roach has indicated that DOE has reported they will close West Road today to allow their crews to enter and clean up road debris.

This large sunflower was seen shining brightly in a White Rock neighborhood Wednesday. The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant native to the Americas. Los Alamos Aquatomics hosted the Nick Nogar Memorial Invitation Swim Meet June 23-24, at the Walkup Aquatic Center.
Swimmers from as far away as Texas were among the 175 swimmers from 11 teams who participated in the event.
