United Skates Celebrates 50 Years
The First United Methodist Church, 715 Diamond Drive (adjacent to Sullivan Field) has hosted the Friday night skate program called “United Skates” for 50 years. May 11th was the true golden anniversary of the skate program.

Kiwanis Club 4th of July Celebration Line Up
The Los Alamos Kiwanis Club and Los Alamos County have announced the tentative schedule for the annual Fourth of July festivities at Overlook Park. Expect fireworks, food, kid’s activities, skydivers and a much more.

15th Annual Los Alamos Kite Festival Begins Friday
Giant Chess Match Set for Saturday
From 4-7 p.m., Saturday May 19, Mario will take on the Ringling Brother’s Circus in an oversized chess match like no other. Students in the 2-d/3-d and ceramics/sculpture classes have created oversized chess pieces out of paper mache. These pieces range in size from 7-feet tall to 4-feet tall. The chessboard is 24-feet by 24-feet. The two chess matches played by the district chess clubs, will take place at the auxiliary gym at Los Alamos High School. Council Approves 8 CIP Projects

Deputy County Administrator Steve Lynne and Capital Projects & Facilities Director Anne Laurent count the votes from the seven Councilors as to how they ranked the CIP projects under consideration for funding this evening. Council has unanamously approved the $2,226,471 Ashley Pond Improvement Project, the $4 million Teen Center, the $4.3 million Nature Center, the $655,000 Eastern Area Sound Wall, the $500,000 Canyon Rim Trail, the $1.5 million Ice Rink Improvements Project and to retain $800,000 in a contingency fund. Sen. Richard Martinez is holding an informal meet and greet session with the public at about 10:30 a.m., Monday at the Coffee Booth in Mari-Mac Shopping Center.
Los Alamos County Council Chair Sharon Stover and Councilor David Izraelevitz are stopping by the restaurant to visit with Martinez as well.
Martinez is a Democrat representing Los Alamos, Rio Arriba and Santa Fe counties in the state legislature. He is running for re-election.

County Communications Manager Julie Habiger calls out ticket numbers for the 30 residents who will speak during the 90 minutes set aside for public comment, which starts in a few minutes. Los Alamos County has announced the process for CIP public comment for tonight’s (Wednesday, May 16) County Council meeting:
- Beginning at 5:45 p.m. (the meeting starts at 6 p.m.) anyone wishing to give comments should plan to line up in Chambers and draw a ticket (a number) out of a bowl. One ticket can be drawn per person. Members of the public may arrive earlier than 5:45 to get a seat in Chambers, but, should note that the drawing won’t begin until 5:45 p.m. – no early ticket distribution.
