Los Alamos students made the most of a delay in their trip this week visiting countries in Europe. Teacher Lynn Ovaska wrote: “Our bus getting back to the hotel was delayed when another school missed the meeting time. Instead of being upset, we all went back over to the Eiffel Tower and laid underneath it when the lights sparkled. LANL: After-hours, Weekend Changes Through East Jemez Road Vehicle Access Portal Begin Monday

Beginning Monday, June 18, all vehicles entering Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) Vehicle Access Portal at East Jemez Road must use center lane number 4 between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. weekdays and all day on weekends.
All other lanes will be closed during LANL’s non-work hours.
During these hours, drivers and bicyclists must stop at the center lane guard post and proceed only upon verbal or hand-signal direction from a LANL protective force officer.
Orange traffic safety cones will be used to funnel vehicle traffic into the center lane.

UK Continues Support for NNSA Nuclear Nonproliferation Programs
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has announced that NNSA and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will continue cooperation to secure vulnerable nuclear and radiological material and reduce nuclear threats around the world.
Under an agreement signed with NNSA’s Office of Global Threat Reduction (GTRI), the U.K. Global Threat Reduction Programme will provide the U.S. $3.5 million to support efforts in Uzbekistan, Belarus and Afghanistan.

The construction project at Los Alamos Middle School hit a snag, but is now moving forward.
The Los Alamos Public School Board learned Tuesday night that the project was put on ice last week after contractor Bradbury Stamms filed a protest.
Board member Dawn Venhaus explained to the Los Alamos Daily Post that during a bid process, bidders are allowed to protest if they feel something is unfair.

The Los Alamos County Recreation Division is hosting the LA Skateboard Competition at 11 a.m., Saturday June 23 at the Los Alamos Skate Park.
The competition consists of Two 90-Second Runs in the Park and an Ollie Competition.
Following the events will be a demonstration from the BZ Skate Team from Beyond Waves in Albuquerque.
Fees are $5 pre-registration and $8 on-site registration the day of the competition.

Police Probe Jamie Lee Ireland Death
Los Alamos Police Department News:
On May 20, the Consolidated Dispatch Center received a call that 28-year-old Jamie Ireland of Los Alamos had sustained injuries after an accidental fall at 802 9th St.
Los Alamos Fire Department was dispatched to the scene and transported Ireland to Los Alamos Medical Center.
Ireland was subsequently transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Santa Fe.
On May 21, the Los Alamos Police Department was notified by personnel at St. Vincent’s that the injuries sustained by Ireland were serious and potentially fatal.

BREAKING NEWS: Search Underway for Black Bear Whose Claws Grazed Juvenile’s Neck at Bandelier

At approximately 4 a.m. today, a black bear swatted at a tent occupied by a sleeping juvenile who was camping with family at Ponderosa Campground.
The tent was torn, and the bear’s claws grazed the back of the juvenile’s neck, causing a minor abrasive injury.
The family immediately left the campground and National Park Service (NPS) Rangers were informed later this morning.

The driver of a small hatchback sedan collided with a deer at about 6 p.m., today on Diamond Drive near the Los Alamos Golf Course.
“The deer jumped out in front of the car, landed on the hood and smashed into the windshield,” Deputy Fire Chief Justin Grider said.
The driver and a passenger are fine, Grider said, but the deer is dead.
