- Bioinformatics breakthrough has clinical & environmental applications
New software from Los Alamos National Laboratory called Sequedex uses evolutionary theory to swiftly identify short “reads” of DNA, calling out the specific organisms from which the DNA came and their likely activity.
“Sequedex makes it possible for a researcher to analyze data hot off a DNA sequencer using a laptop,” said Joel Berendzen, a scientist on the project. “The Read More
Letter to the Editor: Straightening Record on Several Levels
By Jim HallI noticed the column by Ms. Gunther in the Los Alamos Daily Post. It is an unfortunate combination of rehashing a past issue and conflating political posturing with practical policy.
Since I strongly support New Mexico based businesses (see the business-related bills that I advocated) and have a strong record of encouraging New Mexico business development, the column is particularly disingenuous.
A forthcoming column (perhaps columns—this is not a simple subject) will discuss my corporate tax policy position in detail. However, in the interim, Read More

New State Settlement Proposal for San Juan Generating Station Could Lay Foundation for “Third Alternative” Agreement

PNM News:
PNM Resources’ New Mexico utility, PNM, acknowledges that a state settlement proposal released today to address regional haze at San Juan Generating Station appears to be an important step toward an alternative to the current federal plan.
The proposed settlement agreement announced by the state would require several additional actions before moving forward. The first of those actions would be an agreement in principle by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and PNM to support the proposal.
The proposal then would Read More

Los Alamos County has issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to select a developer to design and construct a full-service convention center facility in the downtown district of the Los Alamos townsite.
Los Alamos County is soliciting a developer to design and construct a business conference facility (8,000-20,000 square feet), to include flexible meeting and event space combined with first-class dining and lodging facilities that will compete favorably with other “Class A” conference and lodging facilities in Northern New Mexico, and provide a local venue for special events—amenities Read More

Letter to the Editor: Hall Decent But Richard Far Superior
By Betty Ann Gunther
Jim Hall is a decent person, but we have a far superior Democratic candidate by the name of Stephanie (Garcia) Richard, who is running against him for representative to the New Mexico House of Representatives (Dist. 43.)
Jim Hall has been in the job as an appointee and has supported Republican issues even at the expense of Los Alamos County during the brief tenure of his appointment.
After it was revealed that a press release from Jim Hall claiming endorsements from Democratic Senators was not accurate, I found myself disappointed in Jim Hall’s campaign.
He, and his campaign, Read More

If you are planning to withdraw cash at ATMs while on travel, you will need to know your PIN.

Column: Checks and Balances
By George Chandler
“Checks and balances” is the phrase that describes the interactions among the branches of a government that provides for limiting governmental excess by the separation of powers into legislative, executive and judicial sectors.
For example in the first instance, the federal government, the legislature passes laws but those laws can only be enforced by the executive and interpreted by the judicial, the legislature can remove judges or presidents and controls their budgets but is itself greatly constrained by being bifurcated.
And so on. In the extreme these Read More

By Carl Newton
After attending a Council candidates forum at the Betty Ehart Senior Center last week, I became aware of the extraordinary talents and dedication of the six who are on the ballot.
I also learned something more. When a candidate chooses to run without donations and mimics a good humor man, and seemingly enjoying his candidacy tremendously, that listening to his responses in a forum provides one of the best ways of judging him as a candidate.
I learned that he has outstanding credentials for being a councilor, as well as excellent judgment for decision making.
I know that each of the Read More
