Starting Monday, traffic will be switched to one lane of traffic on each side of the road. Work will continue in the middle median area. Speed limit within the construction area is 30 mph. The Valles Caldera Trust (Trust) released a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the proposed Public Access and Use Plan (PAUP) aimed at expanding visitor access to the Valles Caldera National Preserve (preserve). The plan describes six alternatives for the development of facilities and infrastructure on the landscape including sites for a visitor center. LANL Dissolves N-4 Today
In a memo to staff members, Associate Director W. Scott Gibbs of Threat Identification and Response at Los Alamos National Laboratory announced late last week that N-4 (Safeguards and Security Systems Group) is being dissolved.
N Division recently became the Nuclear Engineering and Nonproliferation Division (NEN) to recognize and expand on two important capabilities for the Laboratory, Gibbs explained in the memo.

About two months ago, a couple of Say’s Phoebes began building a nest at my back door.
The Say’s Phoebe, a passerine, is in the Tyrant-Flycatcher family. Named for Thomas Say, the American naturalist, it is a common bird in the western United States that prefers dry, desolate areas.
After the nest was built, I raised a mirror above the nest to see when things would be interesting to take pictures.
I monitored the nest by holding up the mirror until the first chick appeared, then photographed one or two times a week.

Contractor Inserts Smart Pigs on Local Pipeline

New Mexico Gas contractors are in the process of inserting a Smart Pig on the pipeline in Los Alamos County that runs from Quemazon down to the anniversary water tank at the entrance of town.
Contractor Eddie Saez said work on the pipeline is running two days ahead of schedule and should be completed by mid August.

Fire Reported Between Espanola and Chimayo
FIRE News:
Crews from Santa Fe County are responding to a fire reported at 6 p.m. today in the bosque between Espanola and Chimayo that has burned more than two acres.
Crews report the fire is crowning in the cottonwood trees and burning dense salt cedar undergrowth near Mile Marker 6 at Road 76 in the Chimayo area at the Rio Arriba County line.
Structures are threatened and evacuations have been reported in the area, possibly for a two-mile radius around the fire.

Bandelier Chief Called to Mt. Rainier Tragedy

Bandelier Superintendent Jason Lott was activated Thursday night with the National Park Service Incident Command Team and flew out early Friday morning to help with rescue operations and logistics at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington state.
Lott is expected to be on scene in Washington State for the next week or so.
