Staff Report

Throughout the year, the generous efforts of Los Alamos National Laboratory management and employees helps to enhance the lives of others through the sharing of their time, talent and money.

Each Thanksgiving season, LANL hosts “Take a Turkey to Work Day.” Last year, employees donated more than 400 frozen turkeys and helped fill holiday meal food baskets for 852 Northern New Mexico families.

LANL’s manager, Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS), invests through Northern New Mexico’s United Way Campaign by matching the contributions of LANL employees, dollar-for-dollar, up to $1 million.

LANS contributes up to an additional $250,00 per year to match employee contributions for scholarships for Northern New Mexico students.

LANL campaigns, drives, and volunteering include:

  • LANL Employee Giving Campaign
  • Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund (LAESF)
  • LANL Vecinos Volunteer Program
  • LANL Laces Program (purchasing shoes for elementary school children)
  • School Supply Backpack Challenge
  • Take a Turkey to Work Day/Feed the 500
  • Holiday Gift Drive
  • Wreaths Across America

LANL Community giving campaigns:

Annually during the LANL Employee Giving Campaign, employees are encouraged to make monetary donations to support the United Way of Northern New Mexico, United Way of Santa Fe County, and other nonprofit organizations designated by employees. Our employees’ generosity and the LANS financial match resulted in a record-breaking 2012 campaign of $2.9 million.

Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund (LAESF)

The LAESF campaign raises funds for scholarships that support students from Northern New Mexico. During the 2011 campaign, our employees donated a record-breaking $272,000 that, with the LANS match, resulted in more than $522,000 for scholarships.

On-going volunteering

For the LANL Vecinos Volunteer Program, in partnership with VolunteerMatch, a national web-based system, and Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, employees and retirees can identify community volunteer opportunities, as well as track their volunteer hours.

More than 3,000 volunteers are registered, and they logged more than 1 million hours of volunteerism since 2006. Annually, LANS rewards its volunteers by making a monetary donation on their behalf to their nonprofit organizations. In 2012, LANS donated more than $175,000 to regional nonprofit organizations.

Employee giving drives

LANL Laces

Through the generosity of our employees, many Northern New Mexico elementary students are fitted for a new pair of school shoes as part of LANL Laces. In 2011, almost 355 children received a new pair of shoes through the program.

School supply drive/backpack challenge

LANL organizations engage in friendly challenges to collect school supplies to fill backpacks for Northern New Mexico children as they start the new school year. Through our 2011 Backpack Challenge, children across Northern New Mexico received over 1,200 backpacks filled with school supplies.

Take a turkey to work day/feed the 500

Last year, our employees donated more than 403 frozen turkeys on Take a Turkey to Work Day and helped fill holiday meal food baskets for 852 Northern New Mexico families.

Holiday gift drive

Our employees helped more than 1,130 Northern New Mexico children, senior citizens, and families have a brighter holiday season in 2011 by providing gifts and food.

Wreaths across America

In partnership with LANS and SOC Los Alamos (the Lab’s security contractor), our employees can sponsor a holiday wreath for a military gravesite at the Santa Fe National Cemetery or volunteer to place wreaths at an annual ceremony in December.

In 2011, LANS employees donated $10,000 to purchase 11,000 wreaths. Nearly 200 LANL employee volunteers helped place wreaths at veterans’ gravesites.
