Dear Editor,
Despite the damper of dry weather and fireworks show cancellation, the 2012 Fourth of July Celebration at Overlook Park was a great success.
After a few months of dangerous drought, the big rain was even welcome.
Though we canceled the festivities earlier than planned, the fun picnic setting, yummy food, wonderful music, and very cool skydiving display by the Habanero Skydiving Club made for a great afternoon and evening.
We missed the fireworks, but we still celebrate living in the United States of America – the very best country in the world to be from!

New Beginnings Fellowship Church at 112 East Road lost its chapel to fire on the 4th of July. Los Alamos Police were at the church early Thursday evening. Get Ready for 38th Annual Los Alamos Triathlon
Join the Los Alamos Recreation Division Saturday, Aug. 18, as it presents the 38th Annual Los Alamos Triathlon in all its glory.
The 20k bike ride is back to its old course of challenging climbs and beautiful scenery; then jump in the pool (feet first) for a 400 meter swim; and conclude with the 5K run from the Aquatic Center to the First Baptist Church on Diamond Drive and then turning around and running back to the Aquatic Center.
The Los Alamos triathlon was organized by Bill and Maureen Hudson in 1975 and is the longest running continuous triathlon in the country.

Local Author Launches New Book About Heroic Dog

“Mason, A New Mexico Hero,” describes the life of a dog, originally a homeless and unwanted puppy, running away, finding himself caught and taken to a shelter, from where he is adopted through the local annual Dog Jog into a loving family.
Caroline Mason is the author of this short story. The book is written in the first person by the dog, so the reader gets the dog’s perspective on the importance of food and regular baths and on his adaption to living in a multi-animal home.

The Los Alamos County Fire Department will relax its fire restrictions at noon today to Stage I in Los Alamos County.
This relaxation of fire restrictions is based upon:
- Local weather improvement, including:
- Recent regular rainfall
- The local (7) day forecast that reflects the apparent onset of the monsoon season
- Rising humidity values in the weather
- Fuel condition improvements, including:
- Reduction in Fire Danger Level, from Extreme to High
- Reduction in Ignition Potential, from 100% to 70%
- Increase in the Dead Fuel Moistures to double-digit levels.

Aspen (Populus tremuloides) are trees with admirable beauty, and it naturally follows that we want our landscapes filled with what we find beautiful.
Unfortunately, try as we might, aspen are not well adapted to domestic landscapes, even here in Los Alamos.
They are short-lived, as expected from their role in forest ecology, and even properly cared-for trees may not reach 20 years.
